Your Sleeping Pattern Can Affect Your Skin - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

Why you should get a good nights sleep? The ZZZs you catch every night can have a profound impact on your skin.

A good night's sleep can mean good skin health because when you’re sleep-deprived, your body makes more of the stress hormone cortisol. Elevated levels of cortisol can lead to increased stress and inflammation in the body, hurting your skin’s quality.

But the relationship between skin health and lack of quality sleep can be a vicious cycle, especially with conditions like atopic dermatitis or eczema, which can lead to scratching even through the night.

Not enough sleep worsens existing skin conditions.

Increased inflammatory response shows up as increased acne breakouts, increased skin sensitivity, increased allergic contact dermatitis reactions, and increased irritant dermatitis — and more severe conditions mean more treatment and skin care.

Your skin becomes imbalanced, which leads to a dehydrated complexion, redness, and breakouts. Not only does not getting enough sleep negatively affect your body, it affects the moisture levels in your skin, decreasing them and also lowering your complexion's pH levels, which is why your skin looks less youthful and has less of a glow.

Not enough sleep detracts from your skin's natural beauty.

Increased inflammatory cells in the body lead to an increase in the breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid, the molecules that give the skin its glow, bounce, and translucency.

Not enough sleep makes immune-related skin problems worse.

Increased inflammation in the body throws off the body's ability to regulate the immune system, which leads not only to getting sick more often, but also to flares of immune-related skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema. Psoriasis is not just a skin disease; it's also an indicator of body inflammation. "Many people with severe psoriasis actually have an increased risk for heart attacks, which is even more reason to keep stress low and get good quality sleep.

Not enough sleep results in less beauty.

While you're sleeping, the body's hydration rebalances. Skin is able to recover moisture, while excess water in general in the body is processed for removal. Not getting enough sleep results in poor water balance, leading to puffy bags under your eyes and under-eye circles, as well as dryness and more visible wrinkles.

So make sure you get enough sleep and don't feel bad if you sleep a little too much, its good for your skin.

Exfoliate to reduce acne and get smooth skin - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

Does your skin look dull?  Does a cloud of white particles fly into the area when you peel off your jeans? Both are good signs that you can use more exfoliation in your skin routine, both on your face and on your body.

Exfoliation is an important part of professional facials and body treatments. If you really want smooth skin, get rid of the dead, flaky skin on the surface. "It's a myth that exfoliation can dry or thin the skin," says skin care expert and Aura Skin Clinic dermatologist, Dr. Sravani. "Regular exfoliation speeds up the cell turnover process, allowing the body to produce moisture-bearing properties like hyaluronic acid. Exfoliation also helps to plump the skin by churning up elastin and collagen production."

Why Exfoliation is important...?

The skin is constantly generating new skin cells at the lower layer (the dermis) and sending them to the surface (the epidermis). As the cells rise to the surface they gradually die and become filled with keratin. These keratinized skin cells are essential because they give our skin its protective quality.

As we age the process of cell turnover slows down. Cells start to pile up unevenly on the skin's surface, giving it a dry, rough, dull appearance. Exfoliation is beneficial because it removes those cells that are clinging on, revealing the fresher, younger skin cells below.

Dr. Sravani recommends using a natural resurfacing agent such as glycolic acid to gently dissolve dead surface skin cells so they can be replaced with new, plump ones.Exfoliating is important, but it must be with a glycolic exfoliant gentle enough to be able to use daily (yet still effective!) because the dulling dead cells re-accumulate each day."

Laser hair removal is a rapidly growing cosmetic procedure that helps you to do away with unwanted body hair. And with summers around the corner, it is the perfect time to take up the painful yet important task of unwanted body hair removal. But have you ever tried to find out the physics behind laser hair removal? It actually works through a pulsating beam of light, which targets each hair follicle to stop further regeneration of hair.

During laser hair removal, the light pulses from the laser are absorbed by the melanin, which protects us from harmful UV rays. Then, the hair heats up to well over 100 degrees Celsius, causing it to burn, and vaporizing the water it contains. However, the objective is not to destroy the hair, it is actually to use the hair to destroy the germ cells in the follicle that produce the hair. So it actually appears that hair is being used to inhibit future hair growth without damaging the skin.

Owing to the growing popularity of laser hair removal, Veritasium came out with an interesting slow-motion video on YouTube that reveals the science behind laser hair removal. Take a look!

9 Tips For Finger Nail Care - by Dr Sravani - Aura Skin Clinic, Visakhapatnam

9 Tips To Keep Your Fingernails Looking Their Best

Tip 1 - Keep fingernails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria from growing under your fingernails. Repeated or prolonged contact with water can contribute to split fingernails. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning or using harsh chemicals.

Tip 2 - Practice good nail hygiene. Use a sharp manicure scissors or clippers.

Tip 3 - Trim your nails straight across, then round the tips in a gentle curve.

Tip 4 - Use moisturiser. When you use hand lotion, rub the lotion into your fingernails and cuticles, too.

Tip 5 - Apply a protective layer. Applying a nail hardener might help strengthen nails.

Tip 6 - Ask your doctor about biotin. Some research suggests that the nutritional supplement biotin might help strengthen weak or brittle fingernails.

Tip 7 - Fragile nails can be caused by iron deficiencies. Foodstuffs abundant in iron include liver, trim red meats, species of fish, soy products, beans, lentils, whole grain products, green spinach, fresh vegetables, asparagus, parsley, poultry along with turkey, nuts, egg yolks, dry fruits like raisins, dates and apricots, etc. Eat a lot of these to help keep your nails healthy!

Tip 8 - Beetroots usually contain more calcium and also vitamin D to supplement healthy nail growth. Day-to-day consumption of beetroots is likely to make all your finger nails incredibly healthy and sturdy.

Tip 9 - Likewise for daily nail care, incorporate additional calcium loaded food items for instance milk products into your daily diet.

Winter Skin Care Tips by Dr. Sravani Sandhya - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

The sun is often seen as our skin’s worst enemy, but winter can be just as much of a worry when it comes to skin.Dry and cold air outside  suck out the moisture, leaving us prone to the formation of new lines. Here’s how to take good care of your skin during winters.

Moisture Boost

“Our skin’s barrier function is less effective in winter so we can’t hold on to whatever water our horny (outer) layers of skin attract from deeper skin layers – and we keep losing moisture to the dry winter air by evaporation.

“To combat transepidermal water loss, look for moisturisers containing humectants such as glycerine, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid and urea – they have the ability to hold and attract water in the skin.”

Drink Warm Water

Water helps plump up the skin, but a cold glass from the tap just isn’t that appealing when it’s freezing outside.
Not surprising then that, during winter, we tend to drink much less than the recommended daily 1.6 litres of fluid for women and 2 litres for men.

Warm water is a great hydrator, but if you can’t stomach it, drink white tea instead.

Studies have shown that extracts in white tea strengthen the skin’s elastin and collagen content.

No Long, Hot Showers

Yes, we know there’s nothing nicer than languishing in a steamy shower but your skin won’t thank you.

“Long, hot baths and showers strip the skin of its protective oils, allowing moisture to escape,
Keep showers short and warm (not hot) and as soon as you step out of the steam (while your skin is still damp and pores open) apply moisturiser.

TRY: Popping your jar of moisturiser in a sink of hot water while you’re showering. It will feel warm and comforting going on, but will also help it absorb more easily.

Don’t Forget The SPF

UV rays are still very much at large in winter. Use a broad spectrum SPF no lower than SPF25 to protect against UVA and UVB rays.”

Get Your Oats

Dry skin can feel itchy, but scratching can damage skin and encourage fine lines to form into deeper wrinkles. “Collodial Oatmeal is one of my favourite ingredients in winter skincare.

“It has an anti-itch, anti-inflammatory and ultra hydrating action on the skin.

"The beta gluten in oatmeal leaves skin feeling like satin.”

Special-Eye Care

“The fine skin around the eyes can get extra-dry and sore in winter, especially in cold winds, leading to deepened crow’s feet,”

“Swap your light eye gel for a rich cream containing hydrating rice bran and hyaluronic acid to help balance the skin’s pH.”

It’s A Wrap-Up

It sounds obvious, but covering up with scarves, hats and earmuffs will help avoid moisture loss. Avoid itchy wools if your skin is extra-dry, though.

“Friction from rough clothing can contribute to dry, irritated skin,” warns Dr Stefanie Williams.

Eat Your Fats..!

“Fats are essential for healthy and nourished skin – but be sure to choose healthy (mono-unsaturated) varieties,” says dietitian Nichola Whitehead (nicsnutrition.com). “Fats in nuts and avocados are fantastic for a healthy complexion. They have antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium.”

When to Eat Fruits....? By Dr. Sravani Sandhya @ Aura Skin Clinic - Visakhapatnam

You must have heard all your life people telling you to eat fruits, but did you ever think for a minute when to eat?

Here is what I would like to share about fruits and how you could gain good benefits from consuming them…..!

We should eat fruits when we are in a fasting state or when our liver store is empty, so first thing in the morning on an empty stomach or immediately after exercise. Any time aside from this, the body converts the fructose from the fruits to triglycerides. Not only does fruit juice give you 4 to 5 times the amount of fructose you get in one serving of a fruit, it also lacks the goodness of the fruits fiber. So eat your fruit first thing in the morning, not with the breakfast.

what are oats?

Oat is unique among the cereals for its multifunctional characteristics and nutritional profile.Oat bran especially, is a good source of B complex vitamins, vitamin E, protein, fat, and minerals. Additionally, it is rich in beta-glucan which is heart healthy soluble fiber in particular.

which form of oatmeal is used?

"Colloidal oatmeal" produced by finely grinding the oat and boiling it to extract the colloidal material.

How is colloidal oatmeal prepared?

Colloidal oatmeal is a finely ground form of oatmeal that readily absorbs water. It can be prepared by using a food processor, blender or coffee grinder. Oatmeal from a local supermarket is probably the easiest to obtain, however other forms of oats can be used. The oats should be blended or processed dry to an even and fine powder. You can test the resulting powder by adding it to a glass of water and it should quickly turn to a milky white liquid.

How to prepare a colloidal oatmeal bath?

Slowly sprinkle your self-prepared colloidal oatmeal  onto the bath water as it is filling. People commonly use one cup of colloidal oatmeal for a standard bath of water. The amount will vary for different size baths. You should try and use luke-warm water, as a cooling bath can help soothe itchy skin. The bath water should feel silky on your skin and you should aim to soak for about 15 minutes. Prolonged soaking in water can dry out the skin and aggravate itch and eczema. After getting out of the bath, quickly pat the skin dry. Cover the skin with emollient within three minutes.

what are the uses of oats in dermatology?

The following forms are often used to treat your skin with oats

1. Natural moisturizer
2.anti aging
3.Anti- itch
4.psoriasis
5.Atopic dermatitis
6.Anti fungal
7.Anti vral
