The three different stages of hair growth and why it matters for Laser Hair reduction. Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya Aura Skin & Hair Clinic Visakhapatnam.

Laser hair removal is the best hair removal method. It is virtually painless, quick and helps to reduce hair growth by up to 90%. However, it is a procedure that requires a few sessions to achieve satisfactory results and can be impacted by a lot of factors.

If you are thinking of getting laser hair reduction done you must’ve stumbled upon some references for hair growth cycles or must have wondered why some sessions work much better than the others. Let us talk in detail about how the hair grows and how it affects the quality of treatment.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair.

During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment called melanin in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped hair follicles that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.

Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn't result in permanent hair removal. About 6-8 sessions are needed for initial hair removal and maintenance treatments might be needed as well. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair however it can be successfully used on all skin types.

Unfortunately, the hair growth cycle is not something you can control. If you could, there would be nothing like it. Each hair has a different hair growth cycle, meaning it can be tricky for the laser to catch all the hair at the right time. Let us explain.

Hair Growth Cycle explained

Every strand of hair has three different stages of hair growth.

Anagen Phase

The Anagen phase is the active growth phase. This is the only phase where laser hair removal is effective. Only 20% of hair is actively growing during one Anagen growth phase, hence why multiple treatments are necessary for laser hair removal to be effective for long-term results. The phase can last 3-4 months on the body and 5-7 years on the head. (This is why you can't grow long, head-type hairs on your arms or legs.)

Catagen Phase

The second phase is the Catagen phase, which is the shedding phase. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase. This phase usually lasts around three weeks.

Telogen Phase

The last phase is the Telogen phase, or the dormant phase. Up to 80% of hair can be in the Telogen phase at any time. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase. Durations in each cycle are highly unique to each person and body area. If the hair is targeted in the anagen phase we get the desired optimal result.

It can take 6 to 12 weeks for the hair to go through the cycle. Scheduling sessions every six to eight weeks will give time for the skin to heal after your previous procedure but will also give time to the body hair not in the anagen stage to catch up, go through the proper cycle and enter their anagen phase on time for your next appointment.

SLUGGING THIS WINTER.....Is this trend for you? Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya Aura Skin & Hair Clinic Visakhapatnam.

What is slugging?

As the name suggests the slimy mucus trail the snails and slugs leave behind as they move is what gives this trend it name!! I'm sure you have all heard of this K-Beauty trend over the last couple of years.

It is a trend where you generously apply a petroleum based product as the final step in your skin care routine which in turn helps lock and seal in your skin care products overnight and then wash it off with a cleanser the next day.

Petroleum jelly is a simple and very occlusive ointment which means it forms a protective layer on the surface of your skin in turn helps seal in hydration and keep your skin from drying out.

Benefits of slugging

The protective barrier that petroleum jelly creates on your skin acts as a barrier that keeps water from evaporating from the surface of your face. The potential benefits of this could be:

Moisturizes: The retained hydration can fill the epidermis like a sponge, thickening it and making it more pliable and elastic.

Protects: The barrier keeps water in and keeps unwanted particles out thus preventing them from entering the skin and causing irritation or an immune reaction.

Repairs damage: If your skin is dehydrated, a coating of petroleum jelly at night can help prevent further water loss from the skin and allow it to repair itself.

How often should you do slugging?

Rule number one of skincare is to always be aware of your skin's health and needs. As far as the frequency goes it is best to listen to your skin. If you have skin that tends to be dry, you may benefit from slugging daily. Those that have oily skin or acne prone skin should consider slugging less or not at all. Slugging might make breakouts much worse.

What type of products should you avoid when slugging?

We advice against the use of active ingredients and exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids or retinoids. When trapped the concentration of these chemicals can increase leading to unpredictable results on the skin. Slugging is best paired with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. Slugging does not hydrate the skin but rather traps the moisturizing products that you have applied prior.

How to do it

Slugging is pretty straightforward. Here are the steps to follow to incorporate it into your night time skin care routine.

1. Prep your skin

Slugging should only be done on clean skin, so start your evening routine with cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing. Avoid AHAs, BHAs and retinoids.

2. Apply only a small amount of petroleum jelly

Petroleum jelly is thick and goopy, so you only need a tiny bit — and you don’t necessarily need to put it on your entire face. You can apply it only to the thinnest and driest parts of the face, like your eyelids and your lips.

3. Wait 30 minutes before bed

Give yourself about half an hour before bedtime as it will give your products enough time to settle down. You might want to cover your pillowcase with a towel inorder to prevent it from getting sticky and you might also want to cover your hair to avoid it from sticking onto your face.

4. Sleep on it

A good night’s sleep is beneficial for overall skin health.

5. In the morning, wash your face

Make sure you cleanse your face once you wake up in order to get rid of any dust and grime stuck as well as anything that has been trapped inside the petroleum jelly barrier. Choose an appropriate cleanser.

Who shouldn’t try slugging

Slugging isn’t right for everyone and should be practiced with alot of care and restraint. People with oily skin, acne prone skin should not do it. If you have any infection or open wound skip slugging as it may make the condition worse and hamper healing.

Your Top 3 Laser Hair Removal Questions, Answered By Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin and Hair Clinic, Seethammadhara, Visakhaptanam

As Vizag city is turning cosmopolitan, frequency of cosmetic procedures have taken up. Laser hair removal is become one of the most common cosmetic procedures in India.

At Aura Skin Clinic we have advanced DIODE laser which is FDA approved and its always operated by a certified Dermatologist.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal....?

How does it work ?
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.
How long does it take?
Some individuals will see very long term hair removal which may last for many years. Others may require maintenance treatments over time to maintain their degree of hair loss. It is truly impossible to determine in advance who will require how many treatments and how long the hair will remain gone. As stated above, laser hair removal works best in those with dark hairs on lighter skin, however newer technologies and newer lasers and light sources have made the procedure safe and effective in those with darker skin and those individuals of color.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal ?

Avoid deep tanning (tanning beds, tanning creams), four to six weeks prior to the treatment. If you must go in the sun, use a sunscreen SPF 25 or greater. We require that all patients to wet shave 24 hours prior to the appointed time for the hair to stay in the hair follicle.
Post-Treatment Instructions:

Immediately after the treatment there may be redness and bumps at the treatment site, which will last up to two hours or longer.

It is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn for a few hours. You may use a cold compress, aloe-vera gel, or 1-% hydrocortisone if needed.

Makeup may be used after the treatment, just make sure that you have moisturizer on under your makeup. In fact moisturizer will help the dead hair exfoliate from the follicle so use moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area.

Avoid sun exposure for four to six weeks after the treatment to reduce the chance of dark and light spots. Use sunscreen SPF 25 or greater at all times throughout the course of the treatment.

Do not use any other forms of hair removal methods or products on the treated area during the course of the laser treatment (tweezing, waxing and depilatories), as it will prevent you from achieving your best results. You may shave the area if needed.

Anywhere from five to fourteen days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle.

It is important for you to let us know how long the redness has lasted after treatment when significant hair growth was noticed in the area. This information will help us to individualise treatment and achieve optimal results for you.
