The three different stages of hair growth and why it matters for Laser Hair reduction. Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya Aura Skin & Hair Clinic Visakhapatnam.

Laser hair removal is the best hair removal method. It is virtually painless, quick and helps to reduce hair growth by up to 90%. However, it is a procedure that requires a few sessions to achieve satisfactory results and can be impacted by a lot of factors.

If you are thinking of getting laser hair reduction done you must’ve stumbled upon some references for hair growth cycles or must have wondered why some sessions work much better than the others. Let us talk in detail about how the hair grows and how it affects the quality of treatment.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair.

During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment called melanin in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped hair follicles that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.

Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn't result in permanent hair removal. About 6-8 sessions are needed for initial hair removal and maintenance treatments might be needed as well. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair however it can be successfully used on all skin types.

Unfortunately, the hair growth cycle is not something you can control. If you could, there would be nothing like it. Each hair has a different hair growth cycle, meaning it can be tricky for the laser to catch all the hair at the right time. Let us explain.

Hair Growth Cycle explained

Every strand of hair has three different stages of hair growth.

Anagen Phase

The Anagen phase is the active growth phase. This is the only phase where laser hair removal is effective. Only 20% of hair is actively growing during one Anagen growth phase, hence why multiple treatments are necessary for laser hair removal to be effective for long-term results. The phase can last 3-4 months on the body and 5-7 years on the head. (This is why you can't grow long, head-type hairs on your arms or legs.)

Catagen Phase

The second phase is the Catagen phase, which is the shedding phase. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase. This phase usually lasts around three weeks.

Telogen Phase

The last phase is the Telogen phase, or the dormant phase. Up to 80% of hair can be in the Telogen phase at any time. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase. Durations in each cycle are highly unique to each person and body area. If the hair is targeted in the anagen phase we get the desired optimal result.

It can take 6 to 12 weeks for the hair to go through the cycle. Scheduling sessions every six to eight weeks will give time for the skin to heal after your previous procedure but will also give time to the body hair not in the anagen stage to catch up, go through the proper cycle and enter their anagen phase on time for your next appointment.

Avocado oil... the new age miracle oil..is the hype worth it? Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya

Avocado oil is a great tool for cooking flavorful and healthy meals. It can be used as a dressing for salads as well as cooking since it has a high smoking point. It’s an excellent source of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. Have you ever considered using this delicious fruit oil to soothe and heal your skin?

The absorbent oil is thought to have numerous benefits for your skin, like moisturising dry hands or acting as a natural sunblock. You can apply avocado oil directly to your skin or mix it with your favourite beauty products. Let us look at some of the benefits:

  • Replenishes lost moisture in dry skin
  •   Heals chapped skin
  • Shields skin from harmful UV rays
  • Calms itchy skin

The main benefits of avocado oil are to soothe and add moisture, so it won’t work well if you have oily skin however using avocado oil won’t leave a lot of grease behind. It gets absorbed easily into the skin.

The beta carotene, Vitamins A, D and E help moisturise skin and protect it from damaging UV rays and also help in collagen metabolism. It might also help in wound healing. Some studies have also shown us that it can help treat psoriasis patients as well.

How to use Avocado oil for skin

  • As a lotion to moisturise normal skin: You can apply it onto your skin after you bathe or add a few drops of it to your everyday body lotions.
  • Please avoid if you are allergic to avocados.

There is limited research available to show us the benefits of this oil however it definitely has amazing potential!

LED Light Therapy, Does It Really Work? - Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Vizag

LED LIGHT THERAPY

LED light therapy is something that is synonymous with all the new age dermatological and skincare clinics worldwide. It is a treatment that uses varying wavelengths of light in order to treat different skin conditions, the most popular being red and blue. NASA originally developed it for plant growth experiments on shuttle missions and later found it to have promise for wound treatment. LED light therapy is now used by some aestheticians to help regenerate the skin from aging. It’s also used for acne. Your healthcare provider uses red or blue light frequencies based on the skincare concern. Red is primarily used for anti-aging, while blue is used for acne treatment.

SAFETY OF THIS PROCEDURE

Unlike other types of light therapy, LEDs do not contain ultraviolet rays and are therefore safe for regular use. LED light therapy has no side effects compared to other anti-aging treatments such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser therapy. It is relatively safe for all skin colours and types. Please mention the medicines you take for acne or other skin conditions to your doctor before you start the therapy. You should avoid LED therapy if you have skin rashes. Side effects are extremely rare but may include increased inflammation, redness and rashes.

AFTERCARE

Stay away from the sun for about 48 hours and use sunscreen. In case of any redness or swelling please apply cold packs.

CONVENIENCE OF THIS PROCEDURE

This is a convenient procedure and takes about 20 minutes at the most. It is the perfect treatment to do in the office lunch break. It is most effective when performed every week and later every couple of months.

Red light

Red, or infrared, light is used for treating the epidermis, which is the outer layer of skin. When the light is applied to your skin, the epidermis absorbs it and then stimulates collagen proteins.

In theory, more collagen means that your skin will look smoother and fuller, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Red LED light is also thought to reduce inflammation while improving circulation, which can give you a healthier glow.

Blue light

Blue LED light therapy, on the other hand, targets the sebaceous glands, which are also called oil glands. They’re located beneath your hair follicles.

Sebaceous glands are necessary for lubricating your skin and hair so that it doesn’t dry out. However, these glands can become overactive, leading to oily skin and acne.

The theory is that blue LED light therapy can target these oil glands and make them less active. In turn, you may see fewer acne breakouts. Blue light can also kill acne-causing bacteria beneath the skin, which can help treat severe acne pimples, including cysts and nodules.

Some other wavelengths and their benefits:

AFTERCARE

Stay away from the sun for about 48 hours and use a sunscreen. In case of any redness or swelling please apply cold packs.

How long does it take for light therapy to work?

You can see results from the first treatment, however we would recommend a minimum course of six. For more dramatic results and if you'd like to supercharge your skin we would advise you to take a course of 12 treatments.

Jade rollers - The Anti-Aging tool - By Dr Sravani, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Visakhapatnam

Jade Rollers

Jade facial roller has history of more than 1000s years. It is used from ancient dynasty era. In the past, only richest & most powerful women of their time can possess such a treasure price. It is used to enhance natural beauty. Chinese refers to jade stone as "Stone of Heaven" representing health, wealth, longevity & prosperity. In 2018, jade rollers were all the rage on Instagram, beloved by beauty bloggers across the globe.

The crystal isn't just aesthetically pleasing, but most of the benefits come from the fact that it's cold to the touch (and even more so if like some enthusiasts, you store it in the fridge). “The practice of applying a cold sensation and pressure to an area has been used for centuries because it works without fail,” “It’s simple: The cold restricts blood flow to a particular area, and pressure pushes fluid, known as lymph, to the lymph nodes, which process it and drain it out.”

The little gadget is most commonly made from jade or rose quartz. Some have two roller balls, and some look a bit like a tiny rolling pin (with rollers of varying sizes fixed to both ends of the handle). You can also find rollers made of rose quartz, amethyst, obsidian and metal however jade and rose quartz are relatively more popular.

They’re all said to offer major skin benefits.

So why exactly are people massaging their faces with a face roller? And is this trend here to stay? Let's find out……

A search of #jaderoller on Instagram pulls up more than 116,000 posts, because not only are jade rollers a hot topic of conversation, they’re also more photogenic than, say, tubes of prescription retinol.

How to use a facial roller

Apply a facial oil, serum, or moisturiser which is slippery. If you don’t have lubrication, the tool can pull or tug the skin, which may actually contribute to wrinkles.

Start at the neck and roll upward. For best results, roll up, not back and forth.

Roll from the jawline to the ear on both sides using gentle pressure. You can continue this motion all the way from the jaw to the cheekbone.

Roll from the forehead up toward the temples, only in the upward direction.

Roll flat over your eyebrows horizontally, which may feel especially relieving if you have a headache.

Roll outwards under the eye to reduce under eye bags.

You can use the smaller roller for the sides of the nose.

How to Clean a jade roller?

Remember to keep your jade roller clean with washcloth.use a gentle face wash or soap to kill bacteria and rinse thoroughly with room temperature water.

Avoid putting very hot water on your facial roller or soaking it in water.

It is a cheaper alternative to facials and can give you a few of the benefits if performed regularly at a fraction of the price. It makes us feel we are doing something for our skin at the end of a long and tiring day! We are yet to see how long this beauty craze lasts but until then why not give in to this INSTA trend for the sake of glowing skin!!

Come grab one from our clinic and get all that glow.

Top 5 things a dermatologist should tell you this winter - By Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Visakhapatnam

Follow these 5 important tips, these are the most essential things you need do to keep your skin safe during cold winters.

winter skin care

1.) Stay Hydrated

Your skin will become drier and often more sensitive with the onset of colder weather, You need to keep your skin hydrated as the atmospheric air is drier in winters. An easy way to keep it hydrated is by drinking lots of water or swap your coffee for green tea which has great anti-oxidant effects. Though you might not feel as thirsty during winters as the other seasons but its good to maintain your regular water intake.

2.) Choose Skin Care Products Wisely

What kept your skin happy during summers can make it sad during winters. And that’s why you need to change your skin care products accordingly. The key to healthy and glowing winter skin is using mild skin care products.

Avoid masks and peels, astringent lotions, and any product that contains alcohol as they make your skin dry during winters.

3.) Consider professional skin treatments

“Winter is a great time of year for skin treatments. We always worry about peels and laser treatment in the summer months. With sun exposure before or after such procedures there is a higher risk of unwanted post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. Autumn and winter therefore represents an opportunity.

4.) Protect Your Skin

The warm sun rays feel pleasant in winters, but the UV rays can damage your skin a lot. Choose a sunscreen that has titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Also, avoid going outside immediately after you have washed your hands or after a shower.

5.) Always carry a Lip balm

Almost all of our dermatologists agree that chapped lips are a fact of life during winter, but by regularly applying a hydrating balm, they do what they can to stay ahead of the dryness."Lips become chapped because when people go out in the cold and don’t protect their lips, they tend to get wind burned,” Dr. Sravani Sandhya says.

Your Top 3 Laser Hair Removal Questions, Answered By Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin and Hair Clinic, Seethammadhara, Visakhaptanam

As Vizag city is turning cosmopolitan, frequency of cosmetic procedures have taken up. Laser hair removal is become one of the most common cosmetic procedures in India.

At Aura Skin Clinic we have advanced DIODE laser which is FDA approved and its always operated by a certified Dermatologist.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal....?

How does it work ?
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.
How long does it take?
Some individuals will see very long term hair removal which may last for many years. Others may require maintenance treatments over time to maintain their degree of hair loss. It is truly impossible to determine in advance who will require how many treatments and how long the hair will remain gone. As stated above, laser hair removal works best in those with dark hairs on lighter skin, however newer technologies and newer lasers and light sources have made the procedure safe and effective in those with darker skin and those individuals of color.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal ?

Avoid deep tanning (tanning beds, tanning creams), four to six weeks prior to the treatment. If you must go in the sun, use a sunscreen SPF 25 or greater. We require that all patients to wet shave 24 hours prior to the appointed time for the hair to stay in the hair follicle.
Post-Treatment Instructions:

Immediately after the treatment there may be redness and bumps at the treatment site, which will last up to two hours or longer.

It is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn for a few hours. You may use a cold compress, aloe-vera gel, or 1-% hydrocortisone if needed.

Makeup may be used after the treatment, just make sure that you have moisturizer on under your makeup. In fact moisturizer will help the dead hair exfoliate from the follicle so use moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area.

Avoid sun exposure for four to six weeks after the treatment to reduce the chance of dark and light spots. Use sunscreen SPF 25 or greater at all times throughout the course of the treatment.

Do not use any other forms of hair removal methods or products on the treated area during the course of the laser treatment (tweezing, waxing and depilatories), as it will prevent you from achieving your best results. You may shave the area if needed.

Anywhere from five to fourteen days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle.

It is important for you to let us know how long the redness has lasted after treatment when significant hair growth was noticed in the area. This information will help us to individualise treatment and achieve optimal results for you.
