MICROBLADING…. The new age cosmetic procedure that is taking the world by a storm!! Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya Aura Skin & Hair Clinic Visakhapatnam.

Fuller eyebrows is by far one of the biggest beauty trends today and is going to be for a long time. However not everyone is born with a set of natural looking lush eyebrows. Microblading is your answer!

What is microblading?? It is a cosmetic procedure whereby eyebrows are filled using micro needles and a small quantity of pigment to make them look fuller. However unlike a traditional tattoo that can be permanent these results last upto three years. The eyebrow microblading treatment gives you the arches you’ve always wanted and a made-to-measure, thick, defined, yet perfectly natural-looking brows.

It is a labour intensive procedure done manually with a microblading tool that is essentially a blade that consists of tiny needles which is used to make tiny feathery incisions that imitate the length, colour and thickness of natural hair. Special pigments and sometimes a combination of these pigments are used to match a colour that is closest to your eyebrows! The results are extremely realistic & virtually unidentifiable.

Who does Microblading?

Microblading eyebrows need to be done by  well trained, certified and licensed aestheticians also called microblading artists. In order to stay safe, healthy and get satisfactory results never go to untrained, self-taught artists who don't have the above mentioned credentials.

Who Is Microblading For?

People who have patchy, sparse brows and want to add the illusion of fullness and thickness.

Anyone who uses eyebrow enhancement makeup products every day.

People who don’t have their natural eyebrows, like people with alopecia, or people who suffer from brow hair loss caused by a number of reasons (natural hair loss, invasive treatments such as chemotherapy, postpartum hair loss, etc.)

People with normal to dry skin. Microblading oily skin is problematic, but not impossible. The problem is the fact that pigment is often ‘rejected’ by oily skin, and the microbladed eyebrows don’t last as long due to the overproduction of sebum, which literally pushes the pigments out.

Unfortunately, microblading eyebrows isn’t safe for......

     People with diabetes.

People with serious diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, or autoimmune disorders.

     People with any bleeding disorders.

People who take blood thinning medications (consult your doctor and see if you can pause the meds).

People who’ve recently had Botox injections or fillers in the area (wait at least 2 weeks before you get your brows microbladed).

People with viral infections or diseases.

People who are going through chemotherapy.

People with skin irritations, Rosacea, or Psoriasis near the treated area.

The three different stages of hair growth and why it matters for Laser Hair reduction. Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya Aura Skin & Hair Clinic Visakhapatnam.

Laser hair removal is the best hair removal method. It is virtually painless, quick and helps to reduce hair growth by up to 90%. However, it is a procedure that requires a few sessions to achieve satisfactory results and can be impacted by a lot of factors.

If you are thinking of getting laser hair reduction done you must’ve stumbled upon some references for hair growth cycles or must have wondered why some sessions work much better than the others. Let us talk in detail about how the hair grows and how it affects the quality of treatment.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair.

During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment called melanin in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped hair follicles that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.

Although laser hair removal effectively delays hair growth for long periods, it usually doesn't result in permanent hair removal. About 6-8 sessions are needed for initial hair removal and maintenance treatments might be needed as well. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair however it can be successfully used on all skin types.

Unfortunately, the hair growth cycle is not something you can control. If you could, there would be nothing like it. Each hair has a different hair growth cycle, meaning it can be tricky for the laser to catch all the hair at the right time. Let us explain.

Hair Growth Cycle explained

Every strand of hair has three different stages of hair growth.

Anagen Phase

The Anagen phase is the active growth phase. This is the only phase where laser hair removal is effective. Only 20% of hair is actively growing during one Anagen growth phase, hence why multiple treatments are necessary for laser hair removal to be effective for long-term results. The phase can last 3-4 months on the body and 5-7 years on the head. (This is why you can't grow long, head-type hairs on your arms or legs.)

Catagen Phase

The second phase is the Catagen phase, which is the shedding phase. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase. This phase usually lasts around three weeks.

Telogen Phase

The last phase is the Telogen phase, or the dormant phase. Up to 80% of hair can be in the Telogen phase at any time. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase. Durations in each cycle are highly unique to each person and body area. If the hair is targeted in the anagen phase we get the desired optimal result.

It can take 6 to 12 weeks for the hair to go through the cycle. Scheduling sessions every six to eight weeks will give time for the skin to heal after your previous procedure but will also give time to the body hair not in the anagen stage to catch up, go through the proper cycle and enter their anagen phase on time for your next appointment.

Avocado oil... the new age miracle oil..is the hype worth it? Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya

Avocado oil is a great tool for cooking flavorful and healthy meals. It can be used as a dressing for salads as well as cooking since it has a high smoking point. It’s an excellent source of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. Have you ever considered using this delicious fruit oil to soothe and heal your skin?

The absorbent oil is thought to have numerous benefits for your skin, like moisturising dry hands or acting as a natural sunblock. You can apply avocado oil directly to your skin or mix it with your favourite beauty products. Let us look at some of the benefits:

  • Replenishes lost moisture in dry skin
  •   Heals chapped skin
  • Shields skin from harmful UV rays
  • Calms itchy skin

The main benefits of avocado oil are to soothe and add moisture, so it won’t work well if you have oily skin however using avocado oil won’t leave a lot of grease behind. It gets absorbed easily into the skin.

The beta carotene, Vitamins A, D and E help moisturise skin and protect it from damaging UV rays and also help in collagen metabolism. It might also help in wound healing. Some studies have also shown us that it can help treat psoriasis patients as well.

How to use Avocado oil for skin

  • As a lotion to moisturise normal skin: You can apply it onto your skin after you bathe or add a few drops of it to your everyday body lotions.
  • Please avoid if you are allergic to avocados.

There is limited research available to show us the benefits of this oil however it definitely has amazing potential!

SLUGGING THIS WINTER.....Is this trend for you? Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya Aura Skin & Hair Clinic Visakhapatnam.

What is slugging?

As the name suggests the slimy mucus trail the snails and slugs leave behind as they move is what gives this trend it name!! I'm sure you have all heard of this K-Beauty trend over the last couple of years.

It is a trend where you generously apply a petroleum based product as the final step in your skin care routine which in turn helps lock and seal in your skin care products overnight and then wash it off with a cleanser the next day.

Petroleum jelly is a simple and very occlusive ointment which means it forms a protective layer on the surface of your skin in turn helps seal in hydration and keep your skin from drying out.

Benefits of slugging

The protective barrier that petroleum jelly creates on your skin acts as a barrier that keeps water from evaporating from the surface of your face. The potential benefits of this could be:

Moisturizes: The retained hydration can fill the epidermis like a sponge, thickening it and making it more pliable and elastic.

Protects: The barrier keeps water in and keeps unwanted particles out thus preventing them from entering the skin and causing irritation or an immune reaction.

Repairs damage: If your skin is dehydrated, a coating of petroleum jelly at night can help prevent further water loss from the skin and allow it to repair itself.

How often should you do slugging?

Rule number one of skincare is to always be aware of your skin's health and needs. As far as the frequency goes it is best to listen to your skin. If you have skin that tends to be dry, you may benefit from slugging daily. Those that have oily skin or acne prone skin should consider slugging less or not at all. Slugging might make breakouts much worse.

What type of products should you avoid when slugging?

We advice against the use of active ingredients and exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids or retinoids. When trapped the concentration of these chemicals can increase leading to unpredictable results on the skin. Slugging is best paired with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. Slugging does not hydrate the skin but rather traps the moisturizing products that you have applied prior.

How to do it

Slugging is pretty straightforward. Here are the steps to follow to incorporate it into your night time skin care routine.

1. Prep your skin

Slugging should only be done on clean skin, so start your evening routine with cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing. Avoid AHAs, BHAs and retinoids.

2. Apply only a small amount of petroleum jelly

Petroleum jelly is thick and goopy, so you only need a tiny bit — and you don’t necessarily need to put it on your entire face. You can apply it only to the thinnest and driest parts of the face, like your eyelids and your lips.

3. Wait 30 minutes before bed

Give yourself about half an hour before bedtime as it will give your products enough time to settle down. You might want to cover your pillowcase with a towel inorder to prevent it from getting sticky and you might also want to cover your hair to avoid it from sticking onto your face.

4. Sleep on it

A good night’s sleep is beneficial for overall skin health.

5. In the morning, wash your face

Make sure you cleanse your face once you wake up in order to get rid of any dust and grime stuck as well as anything that has been trapped inside the petroleum jelly barrier. Choose an appropriate cleanser.

Who shouldn’t try slugging

Slugging isn’t right for everyone and should be practiced with alot of care and restraint. People with oily skin, acne prone skin should not do it. If you have any infection or open wound skip slugging as it may make the condition worse and hamper healing.

WHAT IS PRF or the new age PRP treatment???

WHAT IS PRF or the new age PRP treatment???

(PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin): The Ultimate Blood Concentrate)

The use of blood concentrates is becoming more popular in medical aesthetics to help men and women achieve a younger and fresher look by using their own cells. PRF is the next step in the evolution of natural skin and hair rejuvenation.
Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is the second generation treatment after Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). PRF is a natural solution that can treat areas in the face that show the first signs of aging like under-eye hollows, deflated cheeks and the scalp for hair restoration.
Harvested PRP has platelets, fibrin and white blood cells, which helps achieve wound healing, collagen production and improved elasticity. PRF contains a very high concentration of white blood cells, fibrin and a small number of stem cells found circulating in our bloodstream. PRF becomes a gel after 15 to 20 minutes of being isolated and immediately upon being injected into the face or scalp. This process allows it to be used for cosmetic volume and hair restoration.

How Is PRF Obtained?

1.  First, we do a simple blood draw into tubes.
2.  The tubes are then centrifuged for 5 minutes.
3.  The tubes are taken out of the centrifuge and the top portions of the centrifuged tubes are drawn up to obtain the PRF for clinical treatment.

How Is PRF Different From Traditional Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

MORE CELLS = MORE GROWTH FACTORS

The blood that is collected for PRF is spun in a special low-speed centrifuge to isolate the platelets and white blood cells from the red blood cells. The reason the centrifuge is spun at much higher rate to obtain the PRP is to eliminate all Red Blood Cells (RBC) by pushing them down with gravitational force. This is a good idea; however, by spinning the tube too fast for too long we also eliminate the good cells that are necessary.

NO ANTICOAGULANT!
The tubes are 100% Natural and devoid of any anticoagulant or additives. As a result, fibrinogen molecules can be converted to thrombin into fibrin during the blood clot formation.
Since there is no anticoagulant in the tube that the blood is collected, the plasma actually forms a platelet and white blood cell-rich fibrin scaffold once injected into the treatment area. The fibrin clot allows for a much slower and longer release of the growth factors and cytokines (up to 1 week versus few hours with PRP), again resulting in more clinical results.
UP TO 10X PLATELET CONCENTRATION

Since the blood is spinning at very low g-force to obtain the PRF, the platelet recovery is close to 100% with the PRF.  We are also using only 1/10th of the volume collected. Hence, PRF contains more platelets per mcL than PRP. Additionally, PRF also has leukocytes (WBC) & mesenchymal stem cells, unlike PRP, resulting in more potential clinical results.

How Does PRF Work?

Fibrin is a biological scaffold that forms in response to an injury anywhere in the body. Platelets circulating in the blood will bind to a scaffold of fibrin. When platelets bind to the fibrin scaffold, they become activated and release growth factors, which start the wound healing process by creating new skin cells, collagen and blood vessels. By injecting PRF into an area on the face or scalp, a controlled inflammatory response is created, which kickstarts new cell growth and collagen production.

How Is PRF Used?

The prepared PRF is immediately ready for injection into the face to fill facial folds and wrinkles, to plump the hollows under the eyes and dark circles, and to improve skin tone and texture. The PRF can also be injected into the scalp to aid with hair restoration and growth.

How Does PRF Treat The Under-eye Loose Skin And Dark Circles?

The skin under the eyes is one of the thinnest skin on our body. It can be one of the first areas that show signs of aging.  PRF is one of the ideal treatments that improves this area and can be a better option than heat-based skin tightening devices.

PRF can also enhance the results of fillers under the eyes. Injecting fillers under the eyes can instantly improve the hollowness under the eyes and is a fabulous treatment to instantly rejuvenate this area. However, too much fillers under the eyes can make the eyes look puffy or cause a bluish tinge if injected too superficially. Also, it can be very difficult to treat the dark circles only with fillers. Injecting PRF in additional to the fillers can significantly enhance the results of the fillers by tightening the loose skin under the eyes and improving the dark circles.

What is the success rate of PRP or PRF?
A 2017 study in Italy found male patients had increased hair and density in areas where doctors used PRP/PRF therapy.
We believe that it takes a minimum of three months to see an improvement. After that time, most of our patients – both male and female have regrown 30% to 40% of the hair they've lost.
