Toners! Do you really need them? - Dr.Sravani Sandhya, Chief Dermatologist, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Visakhapatnam

What is a toner?

A face toner is a quick, absorbing liquid that helps to remove excess dirt, traces of oil and makeup. It corrects and balances the pH of your skin. It is the step followed before moisturising and follows the cleansing routine. In other words, a facial toner thoroughly cleans the skin and helps remove built up surface dead skin cells. Toners help to clean and close pores.

Choosing a toner for your skin type:

First of all, it's important to always use an alcohol-free face toner. The other ingredients should be picked based on your skin type.

For acne-prone skin, choose an alcohol free toner with alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). This will leave your skin clean and glowing without flaking. A gentle tingle for a few seconds will let you know it has just the right pH level that is slightly acidic. This form of acid is gentle even for sensitive skin, unlike irritating ingredients like retinoids.Salicylic acid is often recommended in a facial toner for acne prone skin. However, this ingredient can be harsh and irritating, especially for sensitive skin.

For dry skin skin and for those who are in 30's and 40's ingredients may like coenzyme Q10, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and vitamin C are helpful.

Witch hazel, aloe vera, grapefruit seed extract, cucumber and vitamin E are some of the soothing ingredients if you have combination skin

If you have oily skin, sandalwood, willow bark, lavender, clary sage and tea tree are your best bet.

For sensitive skin, look for soothing ingredients like aloe vera and cucumbers.

Although essential oils and plant extracts are marketed to help give them a 'natural' and 'good for you' feel, these ingredients may result in skin irritations so it's best to avoid these.

How to use a face toner?
  • Start by cleaning your face with a gentle cleanser for sensitive skin or one that is suited for your skin type.
  • Dampen a cotton ball with the alcohol-free toner, and apply it on your face.
  • Allow it to dry.
  • If you have combination or oily skin, you can use an alcohol-free toner at day and night. For dry skin, it's best to only use it once a day at night time.
  • Always follow with moisturiser for your skin type.

Side effects of using a toner

Toners do not have any adverse side effects, as long as you avoid alcohol-based ones which may irritate your skin. Overusing a toner (more than twice a day) can cause skin irritation.

Can I Skip Toner?

You can skip using a toner in case your cleanser is already pH balanced and gives you a squeaky clean look.

Pro's & Con's of Gel Extensions and Acrylics - By Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Daspalla Hills, Vizag

Are ACRYLICS and GEL NAILS safe ?

Acrylic and gel nails are the flawless solution to chip-free, freshly polished nails that last for several weeks. In today’s blog, we will be explaining the advantages and disadvantages of these nails.

ACRYLIC NAILS

The application of acrylic nails involves filing down your natural nail to create a rough surface to place the glue on. When this step is completed, the acrylic powder and liquid are combined to create a mixture and a mould to glue onto your nails. The artificial nail mould is then shaped and buffed to make your nails appear longer to the custom length and shape you desire.

GEL NAILS

When gel nails appeared for the first time, the industry changed completely. Gel on nails became one of the best inventions that appeared in the field of manicure.Gel nails are basically extensions made using a hard gel product that is even more hardened under an ultraviolet or L.E.D. (light emitting diode) light. The gel is designed to imitate how natural nails look.

Are they safe?

Advantages

1. They last longer for about 3 to 4 weeks, which is awesome compared to a classic nail polish that usually lasts 3 to 4 days, no?
2. They dry instantly while you are still in the salon, no need to worry. So, no smearing, no chipping, no smudging or scratching off
3. Gel and acrylic nails allow the person to experiment fabulous nail designs
4. nails looks fresh all the time
5. The gel is the most close option to natural looking nails, even if you want a french manicure!

Disadvantages

1.Causes nail brittleness and nail thinning
2.Peeling and cracking of nails.
3.Increase risk of skin cancer and premature aging of skin on hands as hands are exposed to UVA chamber for curing of the Gel nails.
4.It takes 6 weeks for your nails to recover.
5.Removal of these nails is harmful as the nails have to be soaked in acetone for 30 mins which will dry the fingers and cause irritation.

Precautions to be taken

Use a broad spectrum sunscreen or UV sleeve on your hands before procedure, Moisturise your nails well between procedures and use cuticle oil to protect your cuticles.Give a good gap of at least one month between the procedures for your nails to rehydrate and repair.Lastly choose a professional saloon who are well trained in the same.if not done the right way it can be very damaging!!!

If you develop breakouts from wearing a mask, you are not alone ! - By Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Visakhapatnam

 MASKNE

In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, wearing a face mask has become part of our daily routine and is unavoidable. It’s now required in all public places, such as restaurants and grocery stores, and almost at all times as a barrier against the new coronavirus that spreads through respiratory droplets.

If you develop breakouts from wearing a mask, you’re not alone. This condition, known as “maskne” (mask acne), is a common side effect of using a mask and wearing it for prolonged periods.

Maskne doesn’t simply cause pimples, though. It may also result in skin issues including redness, bumpiness, and irritation and chaffing.

If you’re concerned about maskne, this is definitely the article you should read. We’ll explore the potential causes, as well as ways to treat and prevent it.

Healthcare and other front-line workers are most at risk because their masks are tighter-fitting and they are wearing them longer. Doctors have reported an increase in acne flare-ups in people outside of healthcare as well.

What to know about maskne skin conditions

Generally, “maskne” is an umbrella term for several skin conditions that can be caused by wearing a face mask or covering. It can include:

  • Acne. Acne happens when your pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and dirt. It can cause pimples, whiteheads, or blackheads.

  • Rosacea. If you have rosacea, wearing a mask may cause flare-ups. This can lead to pimples and redness.

  • Contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis occurs when you’re allergic or sensitive to the material of your mask. It can result in a red rash, along with irritation and blisters.

  • Folliculitis. Folliculitis, or an infection of your hair follicles, causes bumps that look like an acne breakout. You might also experience itchiness or pain.

If you already have one of these conditions, you may be more prone to developing maskne.

How to treat maskne

It’s essential to keep wearing a face mask, even if you have maskne. Keeping your mouth and nose covered is one of the best ways to protect yourself and those around you from COVID-19.

There are several ways to treat maskne symptoms. Let’s take a closer look at each step.

Wash your face regularly

During the pandemic, continue following your regular skin care routine to keep your skin healthy.

This includes washing your face:

  • once in the morning

  • once at night, before going to bed

  • after sweating or wearing a mask

When washing your face, use lukewarm water. Pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing your skin as this may cause irritation.

Use a gentle cleanser

A gentle cleanser can help remove excess oil, sweat, and bacteria. Avoid cleansers that contain alcohol or perfume. These ingredients can cause irritation and make it harder for your symptoms to heal.

If your maskne is more severe, try a medicated cleanser with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

If you have sensitive skin, ask your doctor or dermatologist about the best type of medicated cleanser for your skin.

Use a noncomedogenic moisturizer

After washing your face, apply a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Use a noncomedogenic product, which likely won’t block your pores.

Apply cortisone cream and moisturizer with ceramides

If your maskne mostly involves irritation and raw skin, you may want to apply a mild cortisone cream to the area together with a moisturiser that contains ceramides. This can help protect your skin and relieve itching and irritation.

Take a break from makeup

Skip the makeup while you’re treating maskne. Beauty products such as foundation, concealer, and blush can clog your pores and prolong healing.

Maskne prevention tips

Since you’ll likely need to continue wearing a face mask in public for the foreseeable future, it might help to follow these maskne prevention tips.

Wash fabric masks after every use

Never reuse a cloth mask without first washing it. Use unscented hypoallergenic laundry detergent, then let it dry completely.

Apply a topical antibiotic cream

It’s not uncommon for bacteria to build up under a mask, which can lead to acne. To prevent this, dermatologists often recommend applying a topical antibiotic cream or gel on your skin before putting on your face mask.

Toss disposable masks after each use

After wearing a disposable mask, throw it away. Consider keeping several face masks on hand in case you need a fresh one.

Remove your mask every 4 hours

The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends removing your mask for 15 minutes every 4 hours. This will help give your skin a break.

You should remove your face mask only when you can practice physical distancing with people who aren’t in your household. It’s also important to wash your hands before taking a mask break. Please also make sure it is safe sound to remove your mask.

Apply a moisturiser before wearing a mask

If your skin tends to be dry, a mask may cause irritation. Applying a noncomedogenic moisturizer can help hydrate your skin. A moisturiser can also serve as a barrier between your skin and the mask.

Choose the right mask

To avoid skin issues, be mindful of the type of mask you wear.

Try to wear a face mask that:

  • fits snugly, but not too tight

  • has two or more layers of fabric

  • is made of natural, soft fabric (like cotton)

Avoid masks made of synthetic fabrics, such as nylon or rayon. These materials can irritate the skin.

Wash your face after wearing a mask

Once you’re back at home, wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Follow with a moisturiser to protect your skin. Washing your face is especially important after sweating while wearing a mask.

End note

Although maskne can be frustrating, it’s important to keep wearing face coverings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Regular face-washing, moisturizing, and wearing the right type of mask may help prevent skin problems.

If your maskne is more severe, or if it still persists after trying these recommendations, be sure to follow up with your dermatologist or healthcare provider.

A Cosmetic Procedure that is praised by women and men alike - By Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Daspalla Hills

DIAMOND MICRODERMABRASION

One of the most popular cosmetic skin care treatments available is diamond microdermabrasion, a procedure that is praised by women and men alike. No chemicals or anesthesia are used in the procedure, which is known for being simple and pain-free. It is appropriate for most skin types because it is non-invasive and can effectively reduce or eliminate wrinkles, acne, age spots, stretch marks, and more.

Microdermabrasion treatments are done in medical offices and spas by dermatologists or people who specialize in skin care. You will see immediate results after the procedure, but to get the best effect, you will need as many as six to nine treatments.

Microdermabrasion works by removing a few of the top layers of the skin called the stratum corneum. Much like brushing your teeth, microdermabrasion helps to gently remove "plaque" and skin debris. Since human skin typically regenerates at approximately 30-day intervals, skin improvement with microdermabrasion is temporary and needs to be repeated at average intervals of two to four weeks for continued improvement. Multiple treatments in combination with sunscreen, sun avoidance, and other skin-care creams yield best results.

  • Microdermabrasion is safe for almost everyone, doesn't require anesthesia, and has shown promising results in clinical studies.
  • It reduces lines, wrinkles, and dull-looking skin.
  • It helps to treat age spots and uneven pigmentation.
  • Enlarged pores and blackheads are visibly diminished.
  • Helps treat acne and acne scars.
  • Fades stretch marks.

What ages are appropriate for microdermabrasion?

While there are no specific age or sex restrictions, typically children over age 15 up to adults age 65 can get microdermabrasion. While there is no age limit, mature skin over age 70 may have slightly higher risks of bruising and skin abrasions. Individuals younger than age 12 may sometimes also receive treatment under the care of a dermatologist.

Side effects of microdermabrasion

Common side effects of microdermabrasion include mild tenderness, swelling, and redness. These generally go away within a few hours after treatment.

You might be advised to use a moisturizer to minimize dry and flaky skin. Minor bruising may also occur. This is mostly caused by the suction process during the treatment.

What to expect after microdermabrasion?

There is little to no downtime after microdermabrasion. You should be able to resume your daily activities immediately.

Keep your skin hydrated and use gentle skin care products. Avoid using topical acne medications for at least one day after treatment. It’s extremely important to protect your skin with sunscreen. Your skin can be more sensitive to the sun in the few weeks after the treatment.

You can expect to see noticeable results immediately after the procedure. The number of microdermabrasion sessions needed will depend on the severity of your skin concerns as well as your expectations.

Your provider will likely design a plan for the initial number of sessions, as well as periodic maintenance treatments.

8 Holi skin & hair care tips you must not miss - Dr. Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic - Visakhapatnam

Holi is that one colorful day of the year that we all look forward to. With all the Parties,  Bollywood music, delicious food. It’s that time of the year when you play with colors that add joy to your life.

This holi is definitely going to be different, with the novel corona-virus / COVID-19 on high alert, so should you avoid playing holi completely, NO.

People cannot put their lives on hold, nor is it necessary. Celebrate Holi, but maybe you should not celebrate it with thousands of people. Celebrate with close family and friends, avoid big gatherings as far as possible.

As much as we love this awesome festival of colors, we just hate the aftermath. So, before you step out, make sure you have these checks in place. Here are a few tips that will help make your Holi a fun-filled, safe and colorful one.

1.) Use organic colors only:

Going the organic way is the new trend, and it’s time we stop using colors with chemicals. Organic colors are chemical-free, easy to wash off and so much gentler to your skin.

2.) Cover Up :

Always wear clothes that cover your body, to protect it from strong colors.

3.) Apply Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil is that one miracle product that’ll get you out of every kind of beauty dilemma.before you head out for the day, make sure to lather on your choice of coconut oil on your hair, as well as your body. It’ll make getting cleaned up twice as easy.

4.) Don’t wait for the colors to dry:

Once you’re home, don’t let the colors stay on for too long, take a shower immediately. Use a gentle shampoo to clean your hair, a soft face wash to wash your face and a non-alkaline cleanser to wash your body. It’ll leave your skin feeling clean and refreshed without over-drying it.

5.) Do not use abrasive scrubs or kerosene to wash colors off:

More often than not, it's not the color that much, but the chemicals used in washing away those colors that damage the skin more.Have patience. It's not bad to let it show that you had played Holi the previous day. The residual colors will slowly fade.

6.) Sunscreen is good for you:

Keep using the sunscreen for two more weeks after holi at frequent intervals. Your skin is likely to remain sensitive, especially for people who are known to have allergic conditions. If you develop a rash over the next couple of day, please visit your dermatologist as soon as possible.

7.) Stay Hydrated:

Dehydration causes skin to dry out and this, along with the added chemicals you’re dealing with on holi, can cause skin damage. As you will be spending most of the time outdoors in the sun, it’s always good to drink more water.

8.) Moisturize well:

Use a generous amount of moisturizer on your entire body after taking a shower. This will help get rid of roughness and make sure your skin stays glowing, all day long.

7 Pro tips for your skin before you hit the gym - by Dr. Sravani Sandhya - Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Visakhapatnam

It’s common knowledge to hydrate and stretch before you jump into a workout, but what skin care considerations should you keep in mind before your next sweat session?

1.) Sweating with make-up on can clog your pores and lead to unnecessary breakouts,As part of your pre-workout routine, always remove the make-up from your face before hitting the gym. It takes minutes to do and will save your skin from a lot of stress and discomfort down the road.”

2.) For outdoor workouts you can go for non comedogenic or gel based sunscreen to give you a little coverage without being too heavy.

3.) Keep your hair off your face ― it’s best to keep it pulled back and away from your face during a workout, this helps prevent oils or hair products from clogging

4.) Don’t touch your face!

5.) We already reminded you that gyms are full of germs and other people’s sweat so you don’t want to spread any bacteria onto your skin. So clean your hands.

6.) Always, always, always wash your face post-workout, a quick splash of cool water or a gentle cleanser like and then adding moisturizer or a moisturizer-sunscreen combo before reapplying any makeup.

7.) Pick the right gym towel.

“You don’t want a super plush towel but sort of medium thickness & doesn’t have as much of a plush to it as the fiber in it can hold on to bacteria.

Use ice to reduce post-workout redness.

If you’re someone who gets easily flushed after working up a sweat, grab some ice and suck on it. If you suck on a piece of ice, there’s a temperature receptor on the hard palate of the mouth and it almost resets all the flushing and blushing in your face.”
