Is Bakuchi the new wonder ingredient?? - Dr. Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic Visakhapatnam.

.

Bakuchi or Babchi is the new wonder ingredient that has powerful skin healing properties! Let us talk about this wonder ingredient in detail that is synonymous with being a miracle additive to several skin products. All parts of this magical plant are useful such as the stem, roots, leaves and seeds however the powder of its seeds and the oil are the most potent and effective remedy for the skin. Babchi seeds have been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda and now has found its place in modern science as well.

 Can Bakuchiol replace Retinols?

Retinoids are defined as a family of naturally occurring compounds comprising of Vitamin A(retinols) and its derivatives. Retinol stimulates cellular activity and strengthens the protective barrier of the skin to avoid loss of moisture and collagen promoting tissues. Bakuchiol works with a similar genetic function and results in improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity, firmness and reduction in photo damage without the risks involved with usage of Retinoids.

Some of the other uses in skin care.

  • It helps brighten the skin by visibly reducing the pigmentation and plumps it at the same time by boosting collagen production.
  •  Bakuchi is also known to treat Vitiligo. The active ingredient in Bakuchi is ‘Psoralens’ which on exposure to sunlight helps form melanin in skin that has lost pigmentation. There are studies that suggest that an Ayurvedic paste or Lepa applied to Vitiligo patients is found to be effective.
  • Babchi oil can be used on the scalp & hair to control hair loss, fight fungal infections and also gives relief from psoriasis and eczema.
  • It also has anti inflammatory properties and can help improving acne & their scars. It helps reduce boils and skin eruptions.

What is the difference between Babchi oil and Bakuchiol?

Babchi oil is a product of Bakuchi seeds whereas Bakuchiol is the active chemical component in it. It can be used as an oil though it is better to use it in a blend such as a cream for safe and effective results.

Niacinamide: Benefits & Usage! Reviewed by Dr. Sravani Sandhya

Niacinamide is a common term we hear these days in several skin products and serums!it offers a wide range of well documented topical skin benefits! From acne, eczema to antiageing, you name it and it can help in their treatment. Niacinamide is particularly important to our body, as we cannot produce the vitamin on our own. The vitamin itself is water-soluble, which means that we must either eat it or apply it topically to reap its benefits. Niacinamide also goes by the names “vitamin B3” and “nicotinamide,” a nonacid form of B3.

The benefits of vitamin B3 are as follows…..

  • It helps with acne, rosacea and other skin conditions.

  • It keeps the skin hydrated.

  • Helps treat fine lines and wrinkles

  • It can help prevent skin cancer

  • It repairs skin damage.

  • It is compatible with most other skin products.

Application:

AM Routine

  2. Apply your toner

  3. Niacinamide serum

Snack on Citrus for Natural Glowing Skin #skincaretips by Dr. Sravani Sandhya , Aura Skin Clinic, Visakhapatnam

Natural oils in Oranges help to moisturise skin, providing softer healthier looking skin for
longer.

Antioxidants found in Oranges fight free radicals which may slow down the production
of wrinkles, and stop premature aging.

Oranges have a high content of citric acid which aids in skin exfoliation and improving
the overall look of your skin.

Orange peel has a higher content of Vitamin C than the orange itself, so grind orange
peel and use as a body scrub (not to face) in your daily beauty regime for a healthy
looking glow.

Vitamin C helps the body to form collagen and elastin which will keep your skin looking
younger and more supple.

Oranges could also prevent skin sagging, and may improve firmness.

Common Mistakes While Self Treating Acne by Dr Sravani - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

Here are a few common mistakes people make when self treating acne.

Over – washing. A couple of times a day is normal and as long as you use warm (not hot) water, you’re maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

Using too-strong medications. The high % benzoyl peroxides can easily irritate what is already sensitive skin. Stay on the low end. If you think you need 10%, then it’s time to see a dermatologist.

Using the wrong exfoliant. Those crushed shell products? Throw them out. They make little cuts in your skin and can spread infections. Exfoliants with microbeads are better. Or use a clean washcloth.

Popping without prep. You can buy extractors or pull out a needle, but unless you prep first, you can make matters worse. Rule #1: If the head of your pimple isn’t white, leave it alone. Prep by cleaning your hands, your skin, warming the pimple and sterilizing your pimple and extractor with alcohol.
Use gauze to cover your finger tips. Press up and in from the sides. If at first you don’t succeed, don’t “try try again”.

Forgetting to wash your hands throughout the day. (Applies to phones – wipe them down once a day with an alcohol wipe or screen cleaner.)

Delaying needed medical care. Not seeing a dermatologist when your acne is uncontrolled. Don’t wait to get professional treatment and acne care products. If your acne is more than the occasional pimple, taking steps early can save you years of misery and prevent scarring that can last a lifetime.

Winter Skin Care Tips by Dr. Sravani Sandhya - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

The sun is often seen as our skin’s worst enemy, but winter can be just as much of a worry when it comes to skin.Dry and cold air outside  suck out the moisture, leaving us prone to the formation of new lines. Here’s how to take good care of your skin during winters.

Moisture Boost

“Our skin’s barrier function is less effective in winter so we can’t hold on to whatever water our horny (outer) layers of skin attract from deeper skin layers – and we keep losing moisture to the dry winter air by evaporation.

“To combat transepidermal water loss, look for moisturisers containing humectants such as glycerine, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid and urea – they have the ability to hold and attract water in the skin.”

Drink Warm Water

Water helps plump up the skin, but a cold glass from the tap just isn’t that appealing when it’s freezing outside.
Not surprising then that, during winter, we tend to drink much less than the recommended daily 1.6 litres of fluid for women and 2 litres for men.

Warm water is a great hydrator, but if you can’t stomach it, drink white tea instead.

Studies have shown that extracts in white tea strengthen the skin’s elastin and collagen content.

No Long, Hot Showers

Yes, we know there’s nothing nicer than languishing in a steamy shower but your skin won’t thank you.

“Long, hot baths and showers strip the skin of its protective oils, allowing moisture to escape,
Keep showers short and warm (not hot) and as soon as you step out of the steam (while your skin is still damp and pores open) apply moisturiser.

TRY: Popping your jar of moisturiser in a sink of hot water while you’re showering. It will feel warm and comforting going on, but will also help it absorb more easily.

Don’t Forget The SPF

UV rays are still very much at large in winter. Use a broad spectrum SPF no lower than SPF25 to protect against UVA and UVB rays.”

Get Your Oats

Dry skin can feel itchy, but scratching can damage skin and encourage fine lines to form into deeper wrinkles. “Collodial Oatmeal is one of my favourite ingredients in winter skincare.

“It has an anti-itch, anti-inflammatory and ultra hydrating action on the skin.

"The beta gluten in oatmeal leaves skin feeling like satin.”

Special-Eye Care

“The fine skin around the eyes can get extra-dry and sore in winter, especially in cold winds, leading to deepened crow’s feet,”

“Swap your light eye gel for a rich cream containing hydrating rice bran and hyaluronic acid to help balance the skin’s pH.”

It’s A Wrap-Up

It sounds obvious, but covering up with scarves, hats and earmuffs will help avoid moisture loss. Avoid itchy wools if your skin is extra-dry, though.

“Friction from rough clothing can contribute to dry, irritated skin,” warns Dr Stefanie Williams.

Eat Your Fats..!

“Fats are essential for healthy and nourished skin – but be sure to choose healthy (mono-unsaturated) varieties,” says dietitian Nichola Whitehead (nicsnutrition.com). “Fats in nuts and avocados are fantastic for a healthy complexion. They have antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium.”
