What causes under eye darks circles, pigmentation and know the best treatment options - by Dr Sravani Sandhya , Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag.

Dark circles under the lower eyelids are common in men and women. Often accompanied by bags, dark circles can make you appear older than you are. While there are many causes including genes, stress, oversleeping and sleep deprivation, let us take a look at other factors that can lead to them.

Melanin: If you have not heard about melanin, you must have known about pigmentation. This happens when there is extra absorption of melanin under our eye which results in pigmentation. Consulting a dermatologist would be a quick relief. Usually, he would recommend dark circles under eyes cream as per your condition.

Sleep Deprivation: Oversleeping, extreme fatigue, or just staying up a few hours past your normal bedtime can cause dark circles to form under your eyes. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to become dull and pale, allowing for dark tissues and blood vessels beneath your skin to show.

Fluid Retention: Sometimes, because of fluid retention, our skin around the eyes dome up. This causes puffiness and dark circles are a result of the shadows from the puffiness of eyes. There could be numerous reasons for puffiness such as allergies, high salt consumption, stress etc.

Age: Natural aging is another common cause of those dark circles beneath your eyes. As you get older, your skin becomes thinner. You also lose the fat and collagen needed to maintain your skin’s elasticity.

Thinner Skin: Did you know that the skin type differs from person to person? Those with thinner skin around the eyes are more susceptible to dark circles. Thankfully, we have treatment procedures to remove dark circle under eyes.

Dehydration is a common cause of dark circles under your eyes. When your body is not receiving the proper amount of water, the skin beneath your eyes begins to look dull and your eyes look sunken.Drink lot of water to hydrate your skin .

Skin Sagging:
Individuals who reach a certain age start facing problem of sagging skin. However, premature aging of skin is also predominant among people who are in constant contact with sun. Overexposure to the sun can cause your body to produce an excess of melanin, the pigment that provides your skin with color. Too much sun particularly for your eyes can cause pigmentation in the surrounding skin to darken.Using sunscreen can help avoid this problem.

Genetics: Family history also plays a part in developing dark circles under your eyes. It can be an inherited trait seen early in childhood, and may worsen as you age or slowly disappear.

Iron Deficiency: Because of deficiency of iron, the blood that reaches the eyes lack proper amount of oxygen and the insufficient level of oxygen to the eye tissue cause them to look darker.

Treatment Options for Dark Circles & Pigmentation.

For a more effective and permanent solution, some medical treatments are available to reduce the appearance of dark circles. Some of the more common methods include:
  • chemical peels to reduce pigmentation
  • laser procedures to resurface the skin and enhance skin tightening
  • tissue fillers to conceal blood vessels and melanin that are causing skin discolouration under your eyes.
  • medical tattoos to inject pigment into thinning skin areas
  • fat removal to remove excess fat and skin, revealing a smoother and more even surface
Before deciding on any cosmetic procedure, discuss your options with our doctor and based on your condition we can prescribe the right treatment options.

Don’t skimp on rich, healthy ingredients this season, even if you are trying to slim down. I tell my patients that what they put in their mouths is as important as the products they apply on their skin" says Dr. Sravani Sandhya ( Dermatologist & Founder of Aura Skin and Hair Clinic). It's important to understand staying hydrated & eating whole foods contain tons of nutrients, phytochemical and enzymes that work synergistically to keep us healthy.Working out regularly and keeping your stress levels down can benefit your skin and hair. Here are 7 things you could adopt in your daily routine to get that natural glow on your skin.

1.) Keep yourself hydrated
First and foremost, drink a lot of water — eight glasses or more each day. You can also down some green tea for a boost of healthy antioxidants, Foods that contain mostly water can be just as hydrating for your skin as drinking H2O. Eat water-dense fruits and veggies such as watermelon, plums, peaches, cucumbers, bell peppers, and lettuce more often.

2.) Avoid too much direct sun exposure
Do not expose yourself for long hours to direct sun heat, as the direct sun heat for long hours causes ageing spots and wrinkles. Before going in to direct sun light, use a good sunscreen.

3.) Exercise regularly
Exercise daily till you start sweating. It opens up your skin pores and the toxins escape from your skin.

4.) Avoid smoking and too much of alcohol
In addition to increasing your risk for lung cancer and heart disease, smoking can also wreak havoc on your skin.Smoking causes your body to produce fewer red blood cells. And with fewer red blood cells your skin can start to lose its healthy glow.Smoking will seriously age you.

5.) Moisturizer
Do you moisturize your skin every day? If you don’t, you should. Both men and women can find many benefits to using high quality facial moisturizer every day.Moisturizing everyday can reduce the chance of developing extreme dryness or oiliness. Both extremes are harmful for skin and cause common skin conditions like acne. Moisturizing your face will help you to look and feel younger, you will have softer, more elastic skin, and it will keep your skin hydrated

6.) Avoid stress
Stress happens to everyone, but since you can't avoid your job, bills, or life, the best thing to do is learn to manage the stress.Even small stressors and anxieties can add up and negatively impact the quantity and quality of your sleep. Get at least eight hours of sleep. Since the light from your smartphone's screen simulates sunlight, shut off any electronic devices an hour before you go to sleep.

7.) Eat healthy natural food
Research is now showing that it’s possible to influence your looks simply by choosing specific foods.Eat natural foods & vegetables more often, avoid fast foods. You are what you eat, your skin and hair is a mirror of your inner well being.

What can i do to look younger...? - by Dr. Sravani @ Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

Often people come to me at the age of 40 asking me for skin care to look younger and to have a flawless skin..

You should understand aging is a process and  the way we look is reflection of our habits and behaviour.

what are the things to be avoided to reduce your chronological age?

1) Avoid sun exposure

a) This can be done by using right sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 20.
Make sunscreen application part of your out-the-door routine.

b) Use wide brimmed hats and scars

c) Avoid sun between 10am to 2pm.

2) Smoking accelerates aging is directly proportional to number of wrinkles you have on face. Tobacco smoke gives skin an unhealthy color and coarse texture, as well.

3) Wrinkles at the corners of the eyes (crow's feet) or between the eyebrows (frown lines) are thought to be caused by small muscle contractions. Over a lifetime, habitual facial expressions like frowning, smiling, or squinting leave their mark on our skin.

4) No matter how soft your pillow, it puts pressure on your face each night. Over years, this can etch lines into your chin, cheeks, or forehead. try to sleep on your back to avoid those sleep lines.

Pigmentation (Freckles , Melasma , Aging Spots, Nevus of ota) Laser Treatment in Vizag - Aura Skin Clinic

Looking beautiful is not looking fair, ideal look for naturally healthy skin is a clear radiant even skin tone. When the skin is clear of blemishes it projects a natural healthy radiance.

What do you mean by pigmented lesions?
These are the lesions that are darker than the rest of the skin, result from excess melanin production and deposition.

What is melanin?
Melanin is what gives our skin its color. Melanin is produced by  melanocytes. Melanocytes are pigment-producing cells. The number of melanocytes present in our skin will determine our skin colour.

Why do we get these lesions?
High concentrations of melanin can be due to various factors. Some types are present at birth, hormonal changes, trauma but most occur with age or as a result of overexposure to the sun’s damaging rays.

What are these pigmented lesions?
Freckles, lentigens, Cafe au lait, Nevus of Ota, Mongolian spots and other flat pigmented birthmarks

What are the treatment options?
Skin lightening creams, chemical peels, Q-switched Nd YAG laser is the better treatment of choice and finally with all these treatments sun avoidance is the important factor.

What is Nd YAG laser?
Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) is a crystal that is used as a laser medium for solid-state lasers. Lasers work by emitting a wavelength of high energy light, which when focused on a certain skin condition will create heat and destroy diseased cells. Light pulses target melanin at variable depth on or in the skin.
How many sessions are required?
Sessions vary from 2-6 sessions. Freckles and age spots might not require many sessions but pigmented nevi require about 6-8 sessions.

What is the time gap between each session?
3-5 weeks.

Will the lesions disappear completely?
In most cases, the laser treatment leads to satisfactory fading or complete removal of the freckles and age spots. Most of the birthmarks will fade with treatment but some recur. These may require additional treatment to keep pigmentation at bay.  Age spots often fade or disappear with a single treatment. Thanks to the q switched Nd Yag laser, you (usually) don’t have to live with unwanted freckles, age spots, or pigmented lesions for the rest of your life.

What are the risks of treatment?
Side effects are very rare but if  you are unlucky you can have infection, scaring, hypo or hyperpigmentation.
