Strategic skin and hair care routine this monsoon!! By Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Visakhapatnam

MONSOON SKIN CARE

The rainy season is here and who doesn't love the cool relief we get after the scorching summer heat! We all wait for that alluring aroma of wet soil. Along with that hot cup of chai and pakodas we must also take care of our skin and hair. It also gives us that much needed respite from the sunburns, tans and sweaty days that have just gone by. However, the rainy season also invites humidity and dampness that invites several skin infections, fungus and allergies. We need a strategic skin care approach to deal with these issues and make our skin glow!

1.   Cleanliness is the most important step we must follow in the rainy season. Clean your face at least three times a day with a no soap cleanser to remove traces of grime. This will help maintain clean and healthy skin without stripping your skin off its essential oils.

2.   Exfoliating the skin once a week is necessary to get rid of the dead layers on your skin. Get a regular skin exfoliation treatment like microdermabrasion or a mild chemical peel to reduce the risk of falling prey to infection.

3.   Don’t skip the toner. In summer, we tend to sweat a lot and this can cause our skin pores to open up. Use a toner after cleansing to help shrink these pores. Invest in an alcohol-free toner with antioxidant ingredients like green tea and glycolic acid that help tighten enlarged pores. This also helps to control blemishes and acne, while removing dead cells.

4.   The humidity that is generated after rains can make your skin’s inner layer dry and brittle. Always use a nourishing moisturiser to make your skin moist, supple and healthy. Those who have oily skin should choose a water based moisturiser.

5.   Always go for minimal make-up and products with natural and organic ingredients. Let your pores breathe. Apply a lip balm that can moisturize the lips and keep it handy so that you can use it anytime.

6.   Just because it is cloudy do not avoid using sunscreen. The harmful UV rays can wreck havoc on your skin. Choosing the right sunscreen for the right complexion and skin type is extremely important. Use nothing below SPF 30. Apply generously where your skin gets exposed and reapply frequently or atleast every 2-3 hours.

7.   Make sure you hydrate with lots of water in the monsoon. The excess humidity in the air tends to make us sweat. This in turn can make the skin pale and lack luster. Please drink lots of water to maintain that youthful glow!

8.   It is also of utmost importance to look after our hair during the monsoon. In this season dirt and grime tends to get attracted to it. This can in turn cause a lot of frizz and hair fall. Wash your hair at least 2-3 times a week and use a sulphate and paraben free shampoo. Please make sure to use a conditioner.

Monsoon skin & hair concerns

#1: Fungal infections

“These are more common in the rainy season, mainly due to wet clothes and sweat. Armpits, groin, the skin under the breasts and the area between our toes are most commonly affected.”

Solution

“After bathing, dust some anti-fungal powder (clotrimazole dusting powder is available at all general chemists) on your feet, underarms, body folds and groin. Apply a clotrimazole or ketoconazole-based cream at bedtime.”

#2: Smelly feet

Wearing wet socks, shoes or any covered footwear through the day can create a damp atmosphere which breeds fungus, yeast and bacteria.

Solution

Wash your feet with soap and water if you've been exposed to puddles or rainwater. If your socks get wet on your way to work, change into dry socks when you get indoors. Apply anti-fungal dusting powder before you put your socks on. Dab a little anti-fungal ointment at night. If the condition doesn't improve, please consult a dermatologist.

#3: Acne

Humidity causes our skin to sweat and collect dirt and pollutants more easily. This attracts bacteria, leading to breakouts and boils.

Solution

When you step indoors, always clean your face to wash away the grime and dirt. To avoid accumulation of sweat and dust particles, use wet wipes or salyicylic acid wipes when outside for long hours. Apply an antiseptic cream at night, like Neosporin.

#4: Dandruff and dull hair

Normal and oily hair tends to get greasy in this season, while dry hair tends to frizz. The scalp is also likely to get itchy and flaky due to dandruff.

Solution

Use a shampoo containing two per cent ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione to combat dandruff. Wash and condition your hair regularly to regain its sheen. Use an anti-frizz serum if your hair tends to get frizzy.

Can Women Go Bald - by Dr. Sravani, Aura Skin Clinic, Vizag

Can Women Go Bald & What is Female pattern baldness?
Female pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in women.

Causes

Each strand of hair sits in a tiny hole (cavity) in the skin called a follicle. In general, baldness occurs when the hair follicle shrinks over time, resulting in shorter and finer hair. Eventually, the follicle does not grow new hair. The follicles remain alive, which suggests that it is still possible to grow new hair.
The reason for female pattern baldness is not well understood, but may be related to:
  • Aging
  • Changes in the levels of androgens (male hormones). For example, after reaching menopause, many women find that the hair on their head is thinner, while the hair on their face is coarser.
  • Family history of male or female pattern baldness.

Symptoms

Hair thinning is different from that of male pattern baldness. In female pattern baldness:
  • Hair thins mainly on the top and crown of the scalp. It usually starts with a widening through the center hair part.
  • The front hairline remains unaffected except for normal recession, which happens to everyone as time passes.
  • The hair loss rarely progresses to total or near total baldness, as it may in men.
  • Itching or skin sores on the scalp are generally not seen.

Exams and Tests

Female pattern baldness is usually diagnosed based on:
  • Ruling out other causes of hair loss.
  • The appearance and pattern of hair loss.
  • Your medical history.
A dermatologist will examine you for other signs of too much male hormone (androgen), such as:
  • Abnormal new hair growth, such as on the face or between the belly button and pubic area
  • Changes in menstrual periods and enlargement of the clitoris
  • New acne
A skin biopsy of the scalp or blood tests may be used to diagnose skin disorders that cause hair loss.
Treatment
Untreated, hair loss in female pattern baldness is permanent. In most cases, hair loss is mild to moderate.
Medical management
The only medicine approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat female pattern baldness is minoxidil:
If minoxidil does not work, your provider may recommend other medicines.
Procedures like “Platelet rich plasma therapy”.
Hair transplant
Cosmetic management
Hair weaving, hairpieces, or a change in hairstyle can help hide hair loss and improve your appearance

Prognosis

female pattern baldness is usually not a sign of an underlying medical disorder.
Hair loss may affect self-esteem and cause anxiety.
Hair loss is usually permanent.

Your Sleeping Pattern Can Affect Your Skin - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

Why you should get a good nights sleep? The ZZZs you catch every night can have a profound impact on your skin.

A good night's sleep can mean good skin health because when you’re sleep-deprived, your body makes more of the stress hormone cortisol. Elevated levels of cortisol can lead to increased stress and inflammation in the body, hurting your skin’s quality.

But the relationship between skin health and lack of quality sleep can be a vicious cycle, especially with conditions like atopic dermatitis or eczema, which can lead to scratching even through the night.

Not enough sleep worsens existing skin conditions.

Increased inflammatory response shows up as increased acne breakouts, increased skin sensitivity, increased allergic contact dermatitis reactions, and increased irritant dermatitis — and more severe conditions mean more treatment and skin care.

Your skin becomes imbalanced, which leads to a dehydrated complexion, redness, and breakouts. Not only does not getting enough sleep negatively affect your body, it affects the moisture levels in your skin, decreasing them and also lowering your complexion's pH levels, which is why your skin looks less youthful and has less of a glow.

Not enough sleep detracts from your skin's natural beauty.

Increased inflammatory cells in the body lead to an increase in the breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid, the molecules that give the skin its glow, bounce, and translucency.

Not enough sleep makes immune-related skin problems worse.

Increased inflammation in the body throws off the body's ability to regulate the immune system, which leads not only to getting sick more often, but also to flares of immune-related skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema. Psoriasis is not just a skin disease; it's also an indicator of body inflammation. "Many people with severe psoriasis actually have an increased risk for heart attacks, which is even more reason to keep stress low and get good quality sleep.

Not enough sleep results in less beauty.

While you're sleeping, the body's hydration rebalances. Skin is able to recover moisture, while excess water in general in the body is processed for removal. Not getting enough sleep results in poor water balance, leading to puffy bags under your eyes and under-eye circles, as well as dryness and more visible wrinkles.

So make sure you get enough sleep and don't feel bad if you sleep a little too much, its good for your skin.

Hair Loss Treatment - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

Regardless of the time of year, hair loss is always one of the most frequent complaints in the dermatology clinic. At some point in life, hair loss affects over half of all individuals for one reason or another. Sometimes, hair loss is temporary. In such instances, it may be secondary to another condition or cause, and it may resolve without treatment.

More women than men suffer from temporary hair loss. A variety of causes including hormonal influence, stress, diet, medications, or other medical conditions may play a role in temporary hair loss. However, much more commonly, hair loss is genetic in nature. Some genetic hair loss may also be temporary in nature, but most genetic hair loss will worsen over time if left untreated.Although the loss of hair is generally benign in nature, it can carry a substantial psychological toll on many individuals.

Studies have shown that 52% of women and 28% of men with hair loss are “very-to-extremely upset” about it. Often hair loss will lead to a decline in self-esteem and self-confidence, and may pay a role in the worsening of depression or anxiety. When dealing with hair loss that is secondary to another cause or condition, the causative factor must be treated. However, for genetic-type hair loss there are several currently available treatment options.

Such treatments may be over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription, and they may be delivered topically, orally, or by injection into the skin. In some cases, more than one treatment is recommended in order to utilize multiple mechanisms of action.Topical treatments for hair loss include minoxidil and various steroidal applications. Minoxidil is available OTC. It helps to both maintain current hair growth as well as promote re-growth. It is safe and effective in both men and women, and generally well tolerated. It usually takes 3-6 months to show and effect, and must be used continuously to maintain the benefits. Oral treatments also include both prescription and OTC options. Traditionally, oral prescription drugs options include finasteride, dutasteride, and spironolactone. These drugs work by interfering with the natural hormones that cause hair loss, and depending upon the drug chosen, there are options for both men and women.

These drugs are useful to reduce further hair loss, and in many cases will produce regrowth of previously lost hair. Like many prescription oral drugs, these medications may have systemic side effects, and the risks and benefits of treatment should be discussed with your dermatology provider.

4 Tips To Help You Repair Damaged Winter Hair - Aura Skin Clinic, Vizag

Winter has just started this week. In winter there are gusting winds and low humidity in the air. And low humidity not only dries out your skin but also dries out your hair. If your hair is feeling dry and brittle and is seeking the summer warmth, then read on.

Here are four tips to help you repair your damaged winter hair:

1. Reduce shampooing. Shampooing every second or third day will allow natural oils to remain on your hair and scalp and prevent further drying.

2. Go deep. Once to twice a week, massage a deep conditioner into your hair and scalp and let it rest as you shower. Then rinse with warm water. For extremely dry hair, try using a leave-in deep conditioner or conditioning hair mask that you apply before bedtime and rinse the following morning. Be sure to wear a hair net and to place a towel on your pillow so you don’t stain your bed sheets.

3. Go natural. Using hair dyers and other heating devices take a toll on your hair. When possible, allow your hair to air-dry, but aim for at least once to twice a week.

4. Cool off. Some women who chemically treat their hair (think highlights) and use heating devices regularly (think flatirons), develop trichorrhexis nodosa, or hair breakage. Once hair is broken, you can’t fix it. You can minimize additional damage by reducing usage of heating devices. Try every second or third day instead of every day.

When to Eat Fruits....? By Dr. Sravani Sandhya @ Aura Skin Clinic - Visakhapatnam

You must have heard all your life people telling you to eat fruits, but did you ever think for a minute when to eat?

Here is what I would like to share about fruits and how you could gain good benefits from consuming them…..!

We should eat fruits when we are in a fasting state or when our liver store is empty, so first thing in the morning on an empty stomach or immediately after exercise. Any time aside from this, the body converts the fructose from the fruits to triglycerides. Not only does fruit juice give you 4 to 5 times the amount of fructose you get in one serving of a fruit, it also lacks the goodness of the fruits fiber. So eat your fruit first thing in the morning, not with the breakfast.

Dr Sravani Sandhya Sandhya is a renowned dermatologist and cosmetologist in vizag, offering exceptional service to her patients.
