Winter Skin Care Tips by Dr. Sravani Sandhya - Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

The sun is often seen as our skin’s worst enemy, but winter can be just as much of a worry when it comes to skin.Dry and cold air outside  suck out the moisture, leaving us prone to the formation of new lines. Here’s how to take good care of your skin during winters.

Moisture Boost

“Our skin’s barrier function is less effective in winter so we can’t hold on to whatever water our horny (outer) layers of skin attract from deeper skin layers – and we keep losing moisture to the dry winter air by evaporation.

“To combat transepidermal water loss, look for moisturisers containing humectants such as glycerine, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid and urea – they have the ability to hold and attract water in the skin.”

Drink Warm Water

Water helps plump up the skin, but a cold glass from the tap just isn’t that appealing when it’s freezing outside.
Not surprising then that, during winter, we tend to drink much less than the recommended daily 1.6 litres of fluid for women and 2 litres for men.

Warm water is a great hydrator, but if you can’t stomach it, drink white tea instead.

Studies have shown that extracts in white tea strengthen the skin’s elastin and collagen content.

No Long, Hot Showers

Yes, we know there’s nothing nicer than languishing in a steamy shower but your skin won’t thank you.

“Long, hot baths and showers strip the skin of its protective oils, allowing moisture to escape,
Keep showers short and warm (not hot) and as soon as you step out of the steam (while your skin is still damp and pores open) apply moisturiser.

TRY: Popping your jar of moisturiser in a sink of hot water while you’re showering. It will feel warm and comforting going on, but will also help it absorb more easily.

Don’t Forget The SPF

UV rays are still very much at large in winter. Use a broad spectrum SPF no lower than SPF25 to protect against UVA and UVB rays.”

Get Your Oats

Dry skin can feel itchy, but scratching can damage skin and encourage fine lines to form into deeper wrinkles. “Collodial Oatmeal is one of my favourite ingredients in winter skincare.

“It has an anti-itch, anti-inflammatory and ultra hydrating action on the skin.

"The beta gluten in oatmeal leaves skin feeling like satin.”

Special-Eye Care

“The fine skin around the eyes can get extra-dry and sore in winter, especially in cold winds, leading to deepened crow’s feet,”

“Swap your light eye gel for a rich cream containing hydrating rice bran and hyaluronic acid to help balance the skin’s pH.”

It’s A Wrap-Up

It sounds obvious, but covering up with scarves, hats and earmuffs will help avoid moisture loss. Avoid itchy wools if your skin is extra-dry, though.

“Friction from rough clothing can contribute to dry, irritated skin,” warns Dr Stefanie Williams.

Eat Your Fats..!

“Fats are essential for healthy and nourished skin – but be sure to choose healthy (mono-unsaturated) varieties,” says dietitian Nichola Whitehead (nicsnutrition.com). “Fats in nuts and avocados are fantastic for a healthy complexion. They have antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium.”

Why You Should Visit A Dermatologist & Not a Beauty Parlour For Certain Cosmetic Treatments

Beauty Parlours are offering a lot of skin treatments that are normally performed by a qualified dermatologist, they offer to do these at a lower cost and often people fall for these. If you’re like many people, who are concerned about the cost of consulting a dermatologist and visiting a beautician. you will have to pay a fat bill when you visit the doctor after getting infected by treatment done at a beauty parlour.

Whatever you do, don’t play the guessing game when it comes to skin care. It’s always wise to visit you doctor now than regret later.Beauty parlours often recommend a lot of treatments without understanding your skin and its sensitivity.

Anti Aging Therapies @ Aura Skin and Hair Clinic , Vizag - By Dr Sravani Sandhya

In my last blog I have given tips to keep your skin young and healthy on a long run.So in this blog I want to discuss about different modalities of treatment available to mask away your aging skin..

Anti-aging therapies can be grouped under the following:

• Cosmetological care

• Topical agents

• Systemic agents

• Procedures

Cosmetological care

Excellent sun-protection is essential to avoid photodamage. Proper selection and usage of both UVA and UVB protective sunscreens is advised as ultraviolet irradiation reduces production of type I
procollagen, the major structural protein in human skin.

Daily skin care routine should include avoidance of hot, frequent and prolonged baths and avoidance of detergent soaps and foams, which could actually lead to dryness of the skin. Use of moisturizers
is believed to be a key to fountain of youth, although there is disagreement in the literature about the long-term effects of moisturizing the skin.

Topical agents

Topical treatments have a major advantage of being noninvasive but have a long latency period of 3-6 months before any visible change can be observed; they require perpetual maintenance and can cause contact irritancy or allergy and are expensive.

Tretinoin:
Vitamin C:
Other antiaging topicals: N-furfuryladenine 0.1%, Chlorella, Copper peptide complex is used in the prevention and reversal of photoaging.
Alpha hydroxy acids

Systemic agents

These include vitamins C and E, glutathione, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ 10), green tea (polyphenols), melatonin and selenium.

Hormones: Estradiol and testosterone implantation in postmenopausal women is supposed to retard collagen loss.

Procedures

Procedures refer to office-based treatments that may be either physician-performed or device-driven procedures such as laser treatments.
  • Microdermabrasion:
  • Chemical peels:
  • Botulinum toxin:
  • Soft tissue augmentation
  • Lasers
Cutaneous resurfacing can be broadly divided into ablative skin resurfacing (ASR), which can be accomplished by the use of pulsed carbon dioxide and erbium:YAG; or non-ablative dermal remodeling
(NDR), which can be achieved by non-ablative neodymium: YAG system, radiofrequency, intense pulsed light, fractional photo-thermolysis or light emitting diode photomodulation.

Based on the study performed by the American Society for

Dermatologic Surgery in 1999, it was found that majority of women agreed in the adage 'you look as good as you feel.' The Indian women are no different, except that the cost of procedures to look good is prohibitive. Most of the device-driven procedures are expensive and hence simple office-based procedures like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, fillers and botulinum toxin would continue to be the mainstay of anti-aging therapies in India.

However, advancements in dermatology and explosion of technology will hopefully continue to make antiaging therapies affordable and acceptable to more individuals in future.

At Aura Skin Clinic we advise and perform all the anti-aging therapies based on the client need.

What can i do to look younger...? - by Dr. Sravani @ Aura Skin Clinic , Vizag

Often people come to me at the age of 40 asking me for skin care to look younger and to have a flawless skin..

You should understand aging is a process and  the way we look is reflection of our habits and behaviour.

what are the things to be avoided to reduce your chronological age?

1) Avoid sun exposure

a) This can be done by using right sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 20.
Make sunscreen application part of your out-the-door routine.

b) Use wide brimmed hats and scars

c) Avoid sun between 10am to 2pm.

2) Smoking accelerates aging process.it is directly proportional to number of wrinkles you have on face. Tobacco smoke gives skin an unhealthy color and coarse texture, as well.

3) Wrinkles at the corners of the eyes (crow's feet) or between the eyebrows (frown lines) are thought to be caused by small muscle contractions. Over a lifetime, habitual facial expressions like frowning, smiling, or squinting leave their mark on our skin.

4) No matter how soft your pillow, it puts pressure on your face each night. Over years, this can etch lines into your chin, cheeks, or forehead. try to sleep on your back to avoid those sleep lines.

How Frequently Should You Wash Your Hair...?

No matter how frequently you shampoo, your scalp produces the same amount of oil. Cutting back on shampooing will have no effect on your sebaceous glands; genetics and hormones determine the amount of oil they produce.

How often you wash your hair depends on various factors, Well first of all everyone has different kind of hair. Washing too often, in fact, can do more harm than good, "It's paradoxical, but people who wash their hair a lot to get rid of oil are drying out their scalp and producing more oil Besides avoiding washing every day, there are other things to keep in mind when trying to determine the right amount of washing for you.

Here are the three main important factors:

If your hair is anywhere from normal  to dry, you probably only need to wash it once or twice a week, if you have a greasy scalp, you probably need to wash your hair more often.

Coarse or curly hair slows down sebum's spread, so if you have hair like this you may only need to shampoo once a week. On the other hand, people with fine, straight hair will likely need to shampoo twice a week or more.

Another thing to consider is the paces you put your hair through styling and treating it. If your hair is processed or damaged by styling, you should wash it less frequently.

what are oats?

Oat is unique among the cereals for its multifunctional characteristics and nutritional profile.Oat bran especially, is a good source of B complex vitamins, vitamin E, protein, fat, and minerals. Additionally, it is rich in beta-glucan which is heart healthy soluble fiber in particular.

which form of oatmeal is used?

"Colloidal oatmeal" produced by finely grinding the oat and boiling it to extract the colloidal material.

How is colloidal oatmeal prepared?

Colloidal oatmeal is a finely ground form of oatmeal that readily absorbs water. It can be prepared by using a food processor, blender or coffee grinder. Oatmeal from a local supermarket is probably the easiest to obtain, however other forms of oats can be used. The oats should be blended or processed dry to an even and fine powder. You can test the resulting powder by adding it to a glass of water and it should quickly turn to a milky white liquid.

How to prepare a colloidal oatmeal bath?

Slowly sprinkle your self-prepared colloidal oatmeal  onto the bath water as it is filling. People commonly use one cup of colloidal oatmeal for a standard bath of water. The amount will vary for different size baths. You should try and use luke-warm water, as a cooling bath can help soothe itchy skin. The bath water should feel silky on your skin and you should aim to soak for about 15 minutes. Prolonged soaking in water can dry out the skin and aggravate itch and eczema. After getting out of the bath, quickly pat the skin dry. Cover the skin with emollient within three minutes.

what are the uses of oats in dermatology?

The following forms are often used to treat your skin with oats

1. Natural moisturizer
2.anti aging
3.Anti- itch
4.psoriasis
5.Atopic dermatitis
6.Anti fungal
7.Anti vral

Fungal Infections - Overview by Dr. Sravani Sandhya B , Aura Skin Clinic - Vizag

Fungal Infections

This is one of the common diseases  which I come across in my clinic. Since vizag is  hot and humid round the year people tend to sweat a lot which makes skin a good host for the fungus to grow.
Although there  are variety of fungal infections, the ones  which we see commonly are ringworm (Tinea infections), oral thrush, p.versicolar.

The symptoms and appearance of a fungal skin infection depend on the type of fungus that has caused it. They will also depend on which part of your body is affected..

Fungal skin infections can cause a variety of different skin rashes. Some are red, scaly and itchy. Others may produce a fine scale, similar to dry skin. The fungus can affect just one area, or several areas of your body.

Ringworm of the body (Tinea corporis)

Tinea Facei

This often affects exposed parts of your body, such as your arms, legs or face, and causes a red, ring-shaped rash. Ringworm is contagious. You can catch it by coming into contact with somebody who already has ringworm or touching contaminated items, such as clothing or bedding.

Ringworm of the groin (Tinea cruris)
This is also called ‘jock itch’ because it’s more common in young men. This is because the scrotum and thigh are in close contact and create conditions in which fungi can thrive. It can also affect women if they wear tight clothing. It can cause an itchy, red rash in your groin and the surrounding area.

Yeast infections
Some fungal skin infections are caused by yeast infections, such as the following.

Intertrigo
Intertrigo is a yeast infection that you can get in the folds of your skin, such as on your abdomen (tummy), if you're overweight. It's often caused by the yeast Candida albicans. It affects areas where your skin presses or rubs together and can cause chafing. If you have intertrigo, your skin may turn red or brown and if it’s very moist, it can start to break down.

Pityriasis versicolor (Tinea versicolor)
This condition is caused by a type of yeast called Malassezia. It’s quite common and usually affects young adults after they reach puberty. If you have pityriasis versicolor, your back, upper arms and torso may have patches of scaly, itchy and discoloured skin. This is usually dark brown or white colour. If you have darker skin, it may lose some of its colour.

Thrush (Candida albicans)
C. albicans is a common fungus that often lives in your mouth, stomach, skin and women’s vaginas. Usually it doesn't cause any problems. However, when the immunty is low in conditions like, diabetes, prgnancy and immunosuppression state the yeast can multiply and cause the symptoms of thrush.

Oral Thrush

A thrush infection often looks like small white patches, which leave a red mark if you rub them off. In women, vaginal thrush can cause itchiness and a white discharge.
Thrush can also affect newborn babies in their mouth and this is called oral thrush. It's easy to mistake the white patches for milk. It isn't usually serious, but babies with thrush in their throats may stop feeding properly. Babies may also develop thrush in the nappy area.
So it is important to get these conditions treated.
