Top 5 things a dermatologist should tell you this winter - By Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin & Hair Clinic, Visakhapatnam

Follow these 5 important tips, these are the most essential things you need do to keep your skin safe during cold winters.

winter skin care

1.) Stay Hydrated

Your skin will become drier and often more sensitive with the onset of colder weather, You need to keep your skin hydrated as the atmospheric air is drier in winters. An easy way to keep it hydrated is by drinking lots of water or swap your coffee for green tea which has great anti-oxidant effects. Though you might not feel as thirsty during winters as the other seasons but its good to maintain your regular water intake.

2.) Choose Skin Care Products Wisely

What kept your skin happy during summers can make it sad during winters. And that’s why you need to change your skin care products accordingly. The key to healthy and glowing winter skin is using mild skin care products.

Avoid masks and peels, astringent lotions, and any product that contains alcohol as they make your skin dry during winters.

3.) Consider professional skin treatments

“Winter is a great time of year for skin treatments. We always worry about peels and laser treatment in the summer months. With sun exposure before or after such procedures there is a higher risk of unwanted post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. Autumn and winter therefore represents an opportunity.

4.) Protect Your Skin

The warm sun rays feel pleasant in winters, but the UV rays can damage your skin a lot. Choose a sunscreen that has titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Also, avoid going outside immediately after you have washed your hands or after a shower.

5.) Always carry a Lip balm

Almost all of our dermatologists agree that chapped lips are a fact of life during winter, but by regularly applying a hydrating balm, they do what they can to stay ahead of the dryness."Lips become chapped because when people go out in the cold and don’t protect their lips, they tend to get wind burned,” Dr. Sravani Sandhya says.

It's important to understand staying hydrated & eating whole foods contain tons of nutrients, phytochemical and enzymes that work synergistically to keep us healthy.Working out regularly and keeping your stress levels down can benefit your skin and hair. Here are 7 things you could adopt in your daily routine to get that natural glow on your skin.

1.) Keep yourself hydrated
First and foremost, drink a lot of water — eight glasses or more each day. You can also down some green tea for a boost of healthy antioxidants, Foods that contain mostly water can be just as hydrating for your skin as drinking H2O. Eat water-dense fruits and veggies such as watermelon, plums, peaches, cucumbers, bell peppers, and lettuce more often.

2.) Avoid too much direct sun exposure
Do not expose yourself for long hours to direct sun heat, as the direct sun heat for long hours causes ageing spots and wrinkles. Before going in to direct sun light, use a good sunscreen.

3.) Exercise regularly
Exercise daily till you start sweating. It opens up your skin pores and the toxins escape from your skin.

4.) Avoid smoking and too much of alcohol
In addition to increasing your risk for lung cancer and heart disease, smoking can also wreak havoc on your skin.Smoking causes your body to produce fewer red blood cells. And with fewer red blood cells your skin can start to lose its healthy glow.Smoking will seriously age you.

5.) Moisturizer
Do you moisturize your skin every day? If you don’t, you should. Both men and women can find many benefits to using high quality facial moisturizer every day.Moisturizing everyday can reduce the chance of developing extreme dryness or oiliness. Both extremes are harmful for skin and cause common skin conditions like acne. Moisturizing your face will help you to look and feel younger, you will have softer, more elastic skin, and it will keep your skin hydrated

6.) Avoid stress
Stress happens to everyone, but since you can't avoid your job, bills, or life, the best thing to do is learn to manage the stress.Even small stressors and anxieties can add up and negatively impact the quantity and quality of your sleep. Get at least eight hours of sleep. Since the light from your smartphone's screen simulates sunlight, shut off any electronic devices an hour before you go to sleep.

7.) Eat healthy natural food
Research is now showing that it’s possible to influence your looks simply by choosing specific foods.Eat natural foods & vegetables more often, avoid fast foods. You are what you eat, your skin and hair is a mirror of your inner well being.

Your Top 3 Laser Hair Removal Questions, Answered By Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin and Hair Clinic, Seethammadhara, Visakhaptanam

As Vizag city is turning cosmopolitan, frequency of cosmetic procedures have taken up. Laser hair removal is become one of the most common cosmetic procedures in India.

At Aura Skin Clinic we have advanced DIODE laser which is FDA approved and its always operated by a certified Dermatologist.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal....?

How does it work ?
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth.
How long does it take?
Some individuals will see very long term hair removal which may last for many years. Others may require maintenance treatments over time to maintain their degree of hair loss. It is truly impossible to determine in advance who will require how many treatments and how long the hair will remain gone. As stated above, laser hair removal works best in those with dark hairs on lighter skin, however newer technologies and newer lasers and light sources have made the procedure safe and effective in those with darker skin and those individuals of color.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal ?

Avoid deep tanning (tanning beds, tanning creams), four to six weeks prior to the treatment. If you must go in the sun, use a sunscreen SPF 25 or greater. We require that all patients to wet shave 24 hours prior to the appointed time for the hair to stay in the hair follicle.
Post-Treatment Instructions:

Immediately after the treatment there may be redness and bumps at the treatment site, which will last up to two hours or longer.

It is normal for the treated area to feel like sunburn for a few hours. You may use a cold compress, aloe-vera gel, or 1-% hydrocortisone if needed.

Makeup may be used after the treatment, just make sure that you have moisturizer on under your makeup. In fact moisturizer will help the dead hair exfoliate from the follicle so use moisturizer frequently and freely on the treated area.

Avoid sun exposure for four to six weeks after the treatment to reduce the chance of dark and light spots. Use sunscreen SPF 25 or greater at all times throughout the course of the treatment.

Do not use any other forms of hair removal methods or products on the treated area during the course of the laser treatment (tweezing, waxing and depilatories), as it will prevent you from achieving your best results. You may shave the area if needed.

Anywhere from five to fourteen days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur and this may appear as new hair growth. This is not new hair growth, but dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle.

It is important for you to let us know how long the redness has lasted after treatment when significant hair growth was noticed in the area. This information will help us to individualise treatment and achieve optimal results for you.

Here Comes The Sun, Are you using the right sunscreen. - By Dr Sravani Sandhya, Aura Skin and Hair Clinic

Have you ever wondered if the sunscreen you are using is really working. find out detailed info on how to choose the right sunscreen for your skin.

What is Sunscreen...?

Sunscreens are agents that alter the effects of uv radiation on skin by absorption or reflection of part of the incident radiation

There are different types of sunscreens available in the market and its always a difficult choice to make….

What are properties of sunscreen?

There are two properties in a sunscreen which you should look for SPF (sun protection factor) and substantivity

What are types of suncreens?

UVA sunscreens
UVB sunscreens
Broad spectrum sunscreen

So which sunscreen can I use?

Your sunscreen should be able to take care of two types of UV light that is both UVA and UVB. Which is a broad spectrum sunscreen.

What does a broad-spectrum sunscreen do?

There are two types of UV light that can harm your skin — UVA and UVB. A broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum, sunscreen is designed to protect you from both.

UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkling and age spots. UVB rays can burn your skin. Too much exposure to UVA or UVB rays can cause skin cancer. The best sunscreen offers protection from all UV light.

Only broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher can claim to reduce the risk of skin cancer or prevent early skin aging.

What is SPF and how much SPF should I use?

SPF stands for sun protection factor, which is a measure of how well the sunscreen deflects UVB rays. Theoretically, a sunscreen with SPF15 provides 94% protection from UVB radiation and SPF30 provides 97% protection. Also, keep in mind that sunscreen is often not applied thoroughly or thickly enough, and it might be washed off during swimming or sweating. As a result, even the best sunscreen might be less effective than the SPF number on the bottle would lead you to believe.

Things to remember

Apply generous amounts of sunscreen to dry skin 30 minutes before you go outdoors.

Use sunscreen on all skin surfaces that will be exposed to sun, such as your face, ears, hands, arms and lips. If you don't have much hair on your head, apply sunscreen to the top of your head or wear a hat.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours — and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.

Remember that sand, water, snow and concrete reflect sunlight and make it even more important to use sunscreen.

Since UV light can pass through clouds, use sunscreen even when it's cloudy.

You can apply sunscreen to children as young as age 6 months. Keep younger children in the shade as much as possible.

Use sunscreen year-round, but don't let any product lull you into a false sense of security about sun exposure. A combination of shade, clothing, sunscreen and common sense is your best bet.

Consult our Dermatologist for more info on sun protection and how to take good care of your skin this summer.
